My eyes were light again today, a deep, golden honey color. My thoughts were confusing, it was annoying how my thoughts seemed to want to explode straight through my lips, like I had no filter.
"Are you pretending that I don't exist?"
I blinked. "What?" Irritation from yesterday's memory bled into my voice. Maggie gave me a perplexed look.
"What universe are you in?" She continued like I hadn't spoken.
I met her eyes again, trying hard to keep my mind focused, but no matter how hard I tried my thoughts wouldn't allow it.
"I don't know what you want from me," I told her.
The amused half smile disappeared, and her face was suddenly guarded.
"Nothing," she said too quickly, almost like she was lying.
"It doesn't seem that way."
"I'm sorry, that was rude what I said at first," she sighed. "I'm just worried about you sel."
"I just want to be left alone."
"I wanted to ask you something, but you sidetracked me."
I sighed. "Fine." I was such a sucker. "What do you want?"
"I was wondering whether you still have feelings for Abel because he has a —"
I stopped her. "Is it funny to you?"
Her amused expression was back, the hint of dimples threatening on her cheeks.
"Will you please allow me to finish?" She asked.
Get up and Walk away, I told myself.
I didn't move.
"He has a girlfriend whose name is bella, but apparently she cheated on him."
This was not was i was expecting.
"Are you serious?"
She didn't speak, just nodded.
Then a quick smile reshaped her face, and then she was serious again.
"You should talk to him," she insisted. "I'll see you later."
She got up and spun on her heel and then walked quickly away.
Did she really cheat on him?
—————————————
I ran into the lobby of the boys building, running into the elevator and frantically pressing the up button. Once I got to the forth floor, I ran as fast as I could to his door.
Once I got there, I was greeted with a way different door than before. The xo Symbol that once took over the door was no longer there, leaving a faded outline of it. I assumed that he wasn't in his dorm and was probably leaving, and I had to stop him before he did.
I ran again into the elevator and out the lobby towards the office, knowing he would be signing the exit papers if he was leaving. I hoped I wasn't too late. Once again, my thoughts refused to pass through the appropriate filter.
I came to a stop in the hallway to catch my breath, lifting my head to see that Abel was indeed there, shuffling the papers and handing them to the office lady.
"ABEL!" I yelled, running up to him.
Suddenly I could feel his eyes bore into me. For once it didn't bother me.
"Wow, you really have a talent for tracking me down."
I breathed to loud and he laughed.
"You look worried," he said.
"Well duh," I stopped to breathe again, hearing the edge of a break in my voice. "Are you really going to leave?" I gestured towards the exit papers on the table.
"Yes, shit ain't working out for me anymore here." The smile was fading, and his eyes were serious by the end.
"Are you really going to leave everything behind?" I repeated.
"Yes, there's no point in me being here." The smile disappeared completely and a hard edge crept into his silky voice.
We stared at eachother for a few seconds, but the quiet wasn't awkward this time. It was more...charged. My face started to get hot.
"So," i said looking away so that I could catch my breath. "Are we still friends?"
"Friends...," he murmured. He sounded like it wasn't his favorite word.
"Or not," I offered.
"Well, we can try, I suppose. But not now and I'm warning you again that I'm not a good friend for you to have." His smile was brittle now, the warning real.
"You say that a lot." I could tell he believed what he was saying.
"I do, because you're not listening. I'm still waiting for you to back off. If you're smart, you'll avoid me."
I sighed.
"It was nice meeting you, but my time has come to an end," he said pulling out his dorm room keys and sliding them to the office lady. She smiled and nodded to dismiss him.
I didn't know how to answer. I started down at my shaking hands, not sure what to do. It was so strange to watch him go.
I looked up. He was staring again, his dark eyes curious and— like the first time I'd seen him— frustrated.
"Bye selena," His voice was casual, like he didn't really care about my answer.
I watched him take his bags and walk out the main doors of the school, taking with him what I once loved and adored. A person I would do anything for and wouldn't trade for anyone else.
"Bye abel, I love you."
