Jason:
Shaking. She was visibly shaking.
I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to say to her, I just knew I needed to talk to her.
The way she looked at me during the art lesson told me something was definitely off with her. The only thing my mind could come up with was that I'd probably done something wrong that night of the party.
Maybe not kissing her had been the wrong thing to do.
After a slight protest from her friends, she came with me. I led her to the back double doors that led us outside of the cafeteria.
Immediately after opening the doors, a cool breeze hit us. A few wooden benches were placed beneath the shade of multiple trees. The leafy area had always been my place to cool off on a bad day. It was the perfect place for anyone who was looking for a bit of privacy, which is why I wasn't at all surprised to see a couple girls making out farther away from us. One of them looked up at us briefly, but didn't seem too bothered.
"I've never seen this place before," Jennifer spoke behind me.
She looked around the place almost with a sense of wonder. A ray of sunshine that sneaked through the canopy hit her face and lit up her already vibrant green eyes, the wind gently blowing on her long hair. She really is gorgeous.
"Yeah, I come here every now and then to clear my head, get away from all the noise," I responded.
We sat side by side on a wooden bench that rested on a large tree trunk. She leaned against the trunk, feeling the rugged texture of the trunk with her hands. Already she was feeling the same effect this place had on me the first time I discovered it in freshman year: the feeling like your were somewhere else entirely and not at school.
"Jennifer?" I said, drawing her from her trance.
"Yeah?" She looked at me.
"Why were you acting weird this morning?"
Her face dropped and she stayed silent for a moment before muttering, "Oh, you noticed."
"I did."
She sighed. "Jason, I've been getting mixed signals from you and honestly, I'm not sure what it is I feel for you either. I just wish everything could be written out in black and white you know? But sadly nothing is ever that simple."
I was hoping she'd take a little longer before saying anything so that I could have time to process my own thoughts. Like I said before, I'm terrible with words. But the girl in front of me deserved to hear something, to know something. I knew what I was going to say would probably have terrible consequences and I wouldn't know what action to take next.
But I just had to say it.
You have to say it. For once I fully agreed with my conscience.
I turned my body so that I was straddling the bench and facing her. She inched closer and looked me in the eyes, as if already anticipating my big confession.
I put a hand on her cheek, noting how extremely soft her skin was against my fingers.
"I like you, Jen," I said with a shy smile on my face.
I couldn't remember the last time I had ever said that to anyone. And meant it.
Relief filled me as she smiled at me and put her hands on my face. Her thumbs ran circles on my the slight stubble forming on my jaw. She inched her face closer until she was only a hairs breadth away.
Her eyes closed, her lips brushed mine lightly. But then she pulled away.
She remained silent for a moment before reading the confusion that was probably all over my face. She was just about to kiss me, what the hell?
She sighed. "Why do you like me Jason?"
The question caught me off guard. To be honest, no girl had ever asked me that before, Lennox is exhibit A. For most, just knowing that a guy like me would have interest in them was more than enough, but now, I found myself fumbling for the right words.
"You don't have a real reason do you?" her eyes had glossed over. Oh no.
I sighed before finally speaking. "I like you because I feel like you actually listen to me. Like you're genuinely interested in my interests and not just me, physically. I like how your laugh spreads all across your face. I like how your face is always glowing even when you don't have makeup on. It's as if your inner beauty radiates. I like how you're shy one minute but you're strong enough to stand up for yourself. But most of all Jennifer, I like how everything else just kind of stops when I'm around you."
There was no way to be sure if anything I'd said had got through to her. Her open jaw could easily be repulsion and not admiration. But what I said to her was true.
I realized this was the first time I'd actually poured my heart out to someone and not recited some pick up line or catchphrase from the old archives.
But then it hit me, one thing about laying your heart out for someone is that you're leaving it all to chance. She could either choose to take it and cherish it or stomp on it or walk away.
It could have been mere seconds, or hours, but the moment when I stared at her waiting for a response was excruciating. Then she smiled.
"No one has ever said anything like that to me before," she said.
"I've never said anything like that to anyone before," I smiled back.
"Really?"
"Really."
She put her hands on either side of my face and before I knew it, our lips met.
