"Tapi Ivan tak nak ambik shift malam !" Ivan complained as he stomps his feet furiously like a child. ("But I don't want to take the night shift !")
"Sorry but you have to, everyone else is busy and you and Kamal is the only one who's free," Said Ivan's boss as he looks at Ivan apologetically.
Here Ivan was, trying to convince his boss so he doesn't have to take the night shift. He has always been scared of the thought of sitting at the counter at night. Don't get him wrong. He loves the night sky. The stars that sparkle magnificently enveloped in the serene darkness. Not to mention the cold breeze blowing through your skin, leaving chills down your spine.
The night is his time but obviously, he rather spends it alone in his room rather than sitting behind the 7-eleven counter alone.
It was almost ironic how the reason he wanted to speak to his boss was that he wanted to convince his boss to not let him do the night shift turned into his boss convincing him into taking the night shift for the night.
"Ugh fine, but just for today alright?" Ivan rolled his eyes, still trying to fully process what he was getting himself into. More like what he was forced to get himself into.
His boss beamed showing his pearly whites. He knew he had to give this boy a raise for being a good worker. Ivan has never being a bother to him. He had always been that nice worker who followed his boss's orders.
"Good, shift awak start pukul 10 malam and Kamal will be there with you. " ( "Good, your shift will start at 10 o'clock and Kamal will be there with you")
With a sigh, he thanked his boss and went back into his car. He just sat there in his car, head on the steering wheel but his thoughts were up in the sky.
His name is Ivan, he lives in a homophobic country. He's 20 and currently studying in a university. He took a doctor course. Just like every other Asian parent, his parents want him to be a doctor. Even though he doesn't want to, he figured out that was the only way to make his parents proud after being such a disappointment to them.
Ivan's life is hard. That was all there to be said. But hey, at least he was not living on the street right? That was what he always thought. His life may be hard, but others are going through worse than him.
He put himself last and his parents first. After his forced came out incident, he knew that his parents deserve a better son and he was trying his best to be a better son for them.
That's why he was still a virgin. He just couldn't bear the thought of his parents. He already a disappointment and he don't want to be worse than that. That was also the reason why he took a part-time job as a cashier. It was the midterm holiday and he was trying to make some money, don't want to be more of a burden than he already was to his parents.
After a minute that feels like an eternity, he gained his consciousness and drove back home. He doesn't live with his parent anymore, the university located in a different state so he had to move. Not that he doesn't want to though, he had always wanted to move but he just doesn't have the courage to do so.
He always sends his parents mail. Even though he didn't get one in return. Now I know you're wondering who the hell still use emails to communicate? Well, Ivan still uses it because he thought that it's old school and he has always been fascinated by the idea of sending emails and receiving it. It's like when you got a mail-back in return, all the patience and wait was worth it when you're reading the mail.
Arrived at his home, he parked his car and get ready for his shift. It's already at 9 o'clock. The reason why he came home late was that he went to the beach to take some fresh air. He loved sitting at the beach and just staring at the ocean. He loved the sounds of birds flying around freely moving their wings at the skies. It calmed him. It makes him forget about the world that was against him and just focus on the beauty of the world. He wished to be like the birds, spreading their wings careless for the whole world to see with no particular location in mind.
Just enjoying the serene breath of wind brushing gently against their feathers.
He packed his bags with necessary items and checked his figure on the mirror for the last time. He just sighed at the thought of how he can never be good enough in everything. Not good looking. Not anything.
The wind was blowing, chilling through all of his bones. It was cold. So he decided to bring his jacket with him just for caution. Here, It's surely hot by the day, but it sometimes can also get freezing cold at night.
He started his car and warming up the engine. Throwing his bag at the backseat, he drank the water that he brings to calm his nerve. He just had a very negative thought. He was afraid, what if something bad happens? Well, what could possibly be happening to him that is worse than his life anyway?
Once the car was all warmed up and ready, he drove to the store that he worked at. It called 7-Eleven. It opened for 24 hours and is quite popular in his country. He walked in the store and the smell of the store engulfed him. It has that smell of fresh new items, kind of like when you get new things, it smells fresh, clean and untouched. He guessing that Kamal had probably cleaned up the store.
He took off his jacket and proceed to do his work. Arranging all of the items and look for stuff that needs to be restocked. He saw Kamal walking up to him to help him with the works.
"Ha, buat apa tadi?" Ivan asked with a smirk plastered on his face at the sight of Kamal with a smile that can be seen from a million miles. ( "What did you do ha ?")
"Main phone jer shhh" he answered playfully. ("I was on my phone okay shhh")
"Dengan awek la tu !" Ivan teased while doing the knowing face. Kamal was shocked, he was caught red-handed but then he didn't really care. He knew that Ivan can notice little things like that, they have been working together since Ivan first came in. ("With your girlfriend right !")
"Alaa diamlah, Ivan nanti ada pakwe tahu lah " Kamal replied without looking at Ivan. He knew Ivan was gay, Ivan came out to him and let just say it was not that exciting but Kamal was accepting. ("Shut up, when you get a boyfriend you will know how it felt like")
That statement left Ivan deep in his thoughts. He wondered, will he ever get a boyfriend? What is a boyfriend anyway? People said that a boyfriend is supposed to keep you happy, care for you and just be there for you when you're sad and feel alone. They said having someone by your side will make you happy.
Ivan keeps dreaming about it, what will it felt like to have one? Heck, he hasn't even had his first kiss. It just hits home for him. What will happen one day, when he finished all of these studies. Will he be an old grandpa who lives alone? Of course, he wants someone to share his life with. The problem is, does he deserve one? After all of the disappointment that he put his parents through.
Does he deserve to be happy?
