I run into the Olive Garden with Claire laughing because she knows how much I am obsessed with their breadsticks and Declan just looks extremely confused.
I scream, “Breadsticks are my life!”
I probably look crazy at the moment but I don’t care because their breadsticks are amazing and I haven't been here ever since Devin. Thinking about him and all of our memories makes a frown appear on my face.
Claire notices and since she knows about everything we went through so she says, “Are you okay?”
I don’t want her to have to worry about me so I say, “I’m fine.” I attempt to smile but when I see Claire look even more worried I try to lighten the mood and scream “BREADSTICKS!”
That seems to make her lighten up.
When we walk through the door I immediately see the boy’s and girl’s soccer teams. It would be pretty hard to miss a group of about 30 kids. They all cheer when they see me and most of them either say “Nice goal!” or “Look who decided to get out of the house.” I know they are only kidding. I can’t blame them though, since I barely ever get out of the house now since I’m always busy. I am trying to get my application to Notre Dame filled with as many details that may contribute to my acceptance as possible.
We sit down with Declan on my left and Claire on my right.
The waiter comes over and says “Welcome to the Olive Garden. My name is Jessica and I will be your waiter today. Do you have an idea of what drinks and food you would like?”
Claire and Declan say what they would like but I don’t register what they are saying because I am too busy fantasizing about the breadsticks. ‘So close yet so far’ I think to myself.
When it’s my turn to place my order I say “Can I please just have a basket of like ten breadsticks?”
The whole table laughs because when I used to show up I would get the same thing every time, a bucket of around ten breadsticks. I look at the waiter and she looks more amused than she does creeped out, which is a good thing since most of the time I would get weird looks.
She just smiles and says “Not a problem.” Then she leaves.
‘Nice lady’ I think to myself.
Declan turns to me and says “So, whats with your breadstick obsession?”
“Oh,” I say “It all started when Devin and I went on our first date and he found out I’ve never tried their breadsticks so he basically forced me to eat one . . .” I then stopped talking realizing what I had just told him about.
“Why’d you stop talking?” Declan asks giving me a strange look.
“Um . . . Basically my ex made me try one and I found out how amazing they are. It became our thing.” I said feeling a little upset talking about this to someone who’s basically a stranger.
“So you two broke up?” He asks.
“Something like that.” I say
He opens his mouth, probably to ask me more questions, but before he can say anything thankfully Jessica comes back with my breadsticks. I thank her and then start stuffing my mouth with them.
My friend Kelly turns to me and says “So how does it feel to be the star of the field,” with a teasing grin on her face.
Kelly has brown hair and hazel eyes. She’s the goalie on the team. We’re not as close as Claire and I are but I can still easily say that she’s one of my close friends.
