I wiped the sweat off my forehead with one hand, carrying the a tray of food in my other. It had been a long day; Saturdays always were. Not to mention I had that English exam to study for. Just as I sat down the food for one table, the bell rang again and it was time for me to pick up the next set of dishes from the counter. My feet ached from working all day, but I had to keep going; there were only thirty minutes left in my shift.
I glanced up as someone in a hoodie with headphones walked in, looking pretty tired. He sat down at a table and removed his headphones, placing them around his neck. Looking closer at his face, I noticed he was really handsome. I walked up to his table, ready to take his order.
"Hello sir, can I take your order?" I hated being required to say the same thing to every customer, but it was better than being jobless and broke.
"Burger and fries with a sprite," he replied. His answer was monotone and bored-sounding, but since I'd been working in food service for the previous two years, I was used to it.
"Alright, It'll be out soon," I said. I soon as I said it, he put his headphones back on and went back to listening to his music. I turned around so that he couldn't see my face and rolled my eyes, annoyed. I glanced at my watch to see that my shift would be over in fifteen minutes.
"Order up!" the chef called. I turned in the rude guy's order and picked up the other dishes, being careful not to drop them.
Just as I had hoped, time passed quickly and it was time for me to head home. I hung up my apron, changed out of my work clothes, and slung my backpack over my shoulder. I was relieved that I didn't have to deliver the headphone guy's order to him; I didn't feel like talking to him ever again. Waving goodbye to the chef, I left the diner and started the walk back to the dorms.
It was a brisk day, and autumn leaves had just begun to fall off the trees as winter approached. The breeze blew lightly around me, gently blowing leaves in every direction.
My phone rang, and I pulled out of my pocket. Unsurprisingly, it was my roommate and best friend, Eunji.
I answered and spoke into the phone, "hello?"
"Where the hell are you, you need to get back to the dorms, now!" she yelled into the phone.
"What's wrong?" I questioned, worried.
"Just hurry up," she responded and hung up before I could ask any more questions. I scoffed and began to walk faster, worried that something had gone wrong at the dorms.
Finally, I reached the entrance and jogged up the stairs, praying that everything was okay. I burst into Eunji and I's room, looking around frantically for any signs of disaster. Eunji was nowhere to be seen, and it made me really nervous.
Suddenly, she strode out of the bathroom, making me jump.
"God, Eunji, you scared me to death!" I yelled, "what happened? Is everything okay?"
"Guess what?" Eunji practically screamed.
"What?" I asked apprehensively.
"Sejun finally asked me out!!" she exclaimed.
"Really?!" I said, "that's great! Congrats, Eunie!" I was really happy for her, but I couldn't help but feel lonely. It had been two years since my last relationship, and, for some reason, I still hurt a little from the breakup. I sighed.
"Girl, we need to get you a boyfriend. It's been too long since, well, you-know-who." Suddenly, Eunji gasped and spoke, "Hey! I just remembered, there's this party on Wednesday. You should come with me. Maybe you'll meet somebody."
"I don't know, Eunie. Do you really think that's the best idea?" I said.
"What could go wrong?" she said, "Worst case-scenario, you don't meet anyone at all, and we try another party."
"Alright, I'll go just this once," I told her. I definitely wasn't the type of person to agree to go to a party so easily, but I had to agree with her; it was time for me to move on.
"Great!" she said, "let's go shopping now."
"I wish I could, but I have to save up for the laptop, remember?"
"Come on, I'll buy you a dress." she said Kindly.
"Oh you really don't have to-" I told her.
"No no, it's my treat," she said.
"Thank you so much," I said sincerely. Eunji's generosity never failed to amaze me.
"Let's go now," she said, motioning towards the door.
"Okay!" though my feet and back ached like crap, Eunji's contagiously positive attitude revived me enough to walk a little more. After shutting the door to our dorm's door, I locked it and smiled at Eunji. For once, I actually wanted to go to a party.
