It had been three days since the party, but I still couldn't wrap my head around what had happened. Yoongi had tried calling me five times, but I couldn't bring myself to pick up. I was too ashamed of my actions.
My memories of the night were foggy and inconsistent. I only remembered the feeling of his lips on my lips. What had I been doing, trying to kiss him like that? It was too soon.
The professor's voice droned on as I doodled on my notes. Bored to death, I slowly and carefully slipped out my phone to text Eunji. I typed 'hey, want to meet up for coffee at four?'
Almost instantly, she responded with, 'I wish we could, but I have a date at the amusement park today. Maybe another time?'
I sighed dejectedly and put my phone back in my bag. I should really get more friends, I thought to myself. Ever since middle school, I had always been the type of person to just have one or two really close friends. But even Eunji had seemed distant recently, and I was starting to get lonely.
The professors voice boomed, "you have a two- page essay on symbiosis and it's role in Darwinism due in four days, so I suggest that you clear up any questions with me directly after class. Class dismissed." My mind reeled. A two-page essay on top of all my other studies? I slid my notebook into my bag and exited the lecture hall, the weight of all my assignments heavy on my shoulders.
As I stepped outside, I noticed a man propped against the hood of a red car in the parking lot. My stomach lurched as I looked at his face. It was Yoongi. Well, there's no time like the present, I told myself as I walked towards him, mentally preparing my apology. He looked up and began to walk to me as well. I swallowed. Was he there to see me?
"Look, I'm so, so sorry about what I did at the party. I was drunk and I didn't know what I was doing... I really didn't mean for that to happen," I said when we reached each other.
His eyes softened and he said, "I apologize too. I'm the one who kissed you back. I didn't mean to scare you."
"I wasn't scared. It just reminded me of stuff," I said.
"Did it remind you of good things?" he said coyly with a smirk.
"Shut up," I said playfully as I slapped his arm.
"You wanna go get ice cream?" Yoongi asked, motioning towards the car.
"Sure," I said, caught by surprise. We both got in his car (which I was now exceedingly familiar with). As we drove to the nearby ice cream shop, a question popped into my mind. "How did you find me?"
"Huh?" he asked, confused.
"I mean, how did you know I was going to be coming out of class?" I clarified, looking over at him.
His eyebrows shot up for a moment. "You dropped your class schedule in the car when Hoseok and I took you home with us," he said honestly, briefly glancing over at me to see my reaction. My mind flashed back to the afternoon before the party. I remembered having my class schedule in my purse that day. I sighed, relieved he wasn't stalking me. To make sure, I checked my purse. Surely enough, it wasn't there.
"Oh... I thought you were stalking me, to be honest," I laughed. He gave a bit of a nervous laugh as well, obviously embarrassed that I thought he was a stalker.
"I had to apologize somehow," he said. A feeling of guilt settled in my stomach.
"I'm sorry I didn't answer your calls." I said quietly.
"It's okay... we were both caught off guard."
Soon enough, we arrived at the ice cream place. I smiled as he held the door for me. As I tried to pay for my order, he pushed my hand back and handed the cashier some of his own money.
"My treat," he said as he looked at me.
"Thank you, Yoongi," my heart fluttered a tiny bit at the sound of his voice.
After paying, we sat down at a table for two. Curiosity getting the best of me, I asked, "so... is this a date... or is it like a friends thing?" I regretted asking it, but I still really wanted to know his answer.
"You tell me," he said cooly. My heart fluttered again.
"I asked the question, so you'll give me an answer," I quipped back.
"Feisty today, aren't we?" he paused for a moment before saying, "it's a date, considering I bought your ice cream for you." His answer caught me by surprise, and my eyes widened.
Before I could respond, Yoongi fell out of his chair, sprawled out on the ground. I jumped to his side and began to desperately tap his shoulders. "Yoongi, are you okay? Answer me!" He didn't respond. I looked around desperately as people started to look over at us.
Faint memories of a CPR training course I had taken two years before flashed through my head. I knew what I had to do. When I saw he wasn't breathing, I pointed to a man next to us and instructed, "Please sir, call EMS and tell them to come here." I shouted across the room at an employee, "get an AED as fast as you can!" My heart thudded and my hands began to shake. Carefully unbuttoning his shirt so that I could do CPR, I put my hands into position and began to start compressions on his chest. I tried my best to keep calm as the employee placed the AED beside me. I activated it and connected it to the unresponsive Yoongi, my breaths shaky.
The machine administered a shock as sirens began to wail in the distance. I placed my lips to his mouth and gently breathed two puffs of air, looking at his chest rise and fall. Paramedics arrived as soon as I finished another set of chest compressions. As they loaded him on a stretcher, I answered their questions, my body numb.
I grabbed the car keys off the table, thankful I knew how to drive. A paramedic told me the address of the hospital they were taking him to so that I could meet him there.
As I drove to the hospital, I called Hoseok to let him know what was happening. I drove as fast as legally possible, praying Yoongi would be okay.
