Five

After school I jumped in my trusty pick up and headed for home. On my way home I sighed to myself because I would be home alone for the next few days which meant take-out food and leftovers. Yay, heavy on the sarcasm. What the heck was I going to do with myself?

I pulled into the drive and jumped out of the truck grabbing my bag and the books that didn’t fit. I suppose I could get started on homework.

So there I was an hour later, my homework spread across my desk with my back bent over the chair trying to balance a pencil on my face. Only about a quarter of my work had actually gotten done before I got severely bored. I picked my head up and let the pencil fall to the floor. I walked over to the window looking out across the street into the trees.

I glanced at the clock on my wall and saw that it was almost 4. I didn’t have to make it back for any type of dinner and I wasn’t feeling hungry anyhow. I turned to my desk and just grabbed my phone before walking to leave my room.

After locking the back door, I sat down in the hall and put on some of my old junky sneakers. I also grabbed a sweatshirt in case it got chilly and pulled it over my head.

I left the house locking the door behind me and jogging across the street, heading for the little opening I had found when I first arrived. I noticed a slight breeze that was whipping loose strands of hair around my face. I pushed my way through the brush that had grown in since the last time I walked through here.

A few minutes later I had barreled my way into the opening that I claimed as mine. On the far side of the clearing, where the trees went back to being thick, I thought that I saw something move. I briefly thought back to Seth telling me to stay out of the woods but soon brushed it off.

I walked over to the only tree in the middle of the clearing and plopped myself down in the split.

“Ahhh…” I sighed as I relaxed in the hammock the tree created.

I was sitting with my legs bent and my back and head leaning back against the tree when again something caught my eye but this time to the left. Once again I brushed it off, I mean it was the woods after all and there were bound to be animals out here. I closed my eyes so that nothing more would catch my eye.

When I closed my eyes I could hear almost every little sound like the birds singing in the trees. In an attempt to amuse myself I tried to copy their songs but failed miserably. I did get a good chuckle out of it though and I went back to listening. I heard leaves being rustled and the chatter of chipmunks. At one point I thought I heard a faint rumble like a growl but that was right before I fell asleep.

“Rose! Wake the fuck up!”

I jumped awake and tried to pull away from the masculine hands that had a death grip around my arm. I looked up and came face to face with a very angry and very ticked off Seth.

“Ow. Let go, that hurts!” I winced still trying to pry his fingers off.

Guilt flashed across his face but was quickly replaced with his anger again and he loosened his grip but still held both my arms. “I warned you not to come out here now we have to go.” He tugged on me again pulling me out of the tree.

“Seth!” I yelled still pulling against his grip but he was definitely stronger. “Let me go! I’ll go home if you just let me go.”

He snapped his head to face in front of us and stood stock still. “Too late for that,” He turned to me. “Stay behind me.”
