Chapter 1 – Three, Four. Better Lock Your Door

{Dr. Felton POV}

Doctor Felton was out on the job. What is his job I hear you ask? His job is his gift. He is gifted with the ability to find other vampires soul mates. And it was on this night that he’d caught the trail of another one…a young woman…about twenty he reckoned…who’d be getting the shock of her life in a few days when she was presented to her mate for the pairs bonding.

He stopped as he saw a group standing at the corner of the block he was walking down; some of them hanging off each other’s faces in a public display of affection he deemed rather fake…and that’s when he saw her. Bright blue eyes and a shy smile set in a pretty face framed by shoulder length black hair. That was her…it had to be…

Doctor Felton looked at the girl again and felt the tugging at his mind grow stronger…yes, she was a mate of one of his species. An image of Ricky ‘Horror’ Olson from the Motionless Clan flashed into his mind as he saw her smile and realised who she was for…and then the wind shifted and he smelt her. He breathed in sharply. “Fuck…” he groaned, looking cautiously at the girl as her gaze fell on him briefly. “She’s got Hunters blood…” he ran a hand through his hair as he pulled his phone from his pocket. “Well, this should go swimmingly…” he dialled a number and held the phone to his ear, smiling at the voice that answered. “Ah, Cara, so glad to hear your voice…yes, listen…are you and Stephen available this evening? Good…Because I need you two to help me bring someone in…yes,” Doctor Felton looked back a the girl and saw her watching him intently. “She’s a human mate…”

{Natalie POV}

“Tally…Tally? Tally!” I looked at my friend, Jay, curiously and frowned as he waved a hand in front of my face. “You in there girl? You’ve been dead quiet all night…”

I smiled. “Yeah, I’m in here. So get your hand out of my face will ya?” I looked back at the guy talking on his phone as Jay’s girlfriend, Sally, began pulling him off down the street again.

“You coming Tally?” Jay called over his shoulder to me as I saw the guy pocket his phone and look at me pointedly.

“Ah, on second thoughts guys…I think I’ll head home.” They all groaned and I made a mocking noise back at them. “It’s three in the morning…I’ve had enough, I’m going home to bed.” I turned and headed for the short-cut home through the park. “Night guys!” I called out and heard them all say goodbye.

I slipped through the park gate and made a beeline for the back path, pulling a blade laced with silver from my boot and walked as quietly as I could, glad when I finally made it into the ally that lead between the houses that encroached on the park. I was just about to the end of the ally when a figure stepped into the opening…I sighed in frustration and gripped the knife in my hand tighter.

“Good evening…” he said, stepping forward so that the lamplight hit his face.

“You going to give me some cliché line about ‘being lost’ or call me a ‘little girl’?” I asked sarcastically and twirled the knife in the light where he could see.

“I know you know what I am…” he said softly and I raised an eyebrow at him. “You’re a Hunter…” he smirked slightly as he breathed in and took a step forward. “Or will be when you finish your training…how unfortunate that I’m going to prevent you from doing just that.”

“I think not.” I smirked back as I found the little ball of Peruvian Black Dust in my pocket and crushed it as I pulled my hand free of my pocket again. “I’m not being anyone’s meal.” I stated firmly and threw the Dust at the ground, smiling as it swirled up and engulfed us both, allowing me to escape through the loose fence boards to my left while he coughed loudly.

I stumbled through the dark yard and out the opposite fence, hissing as I caught my hand on a sharp part of the wire. “You really need to learn to think, little darlin’…” I heard a soft Southern drawl dead ahead of me and my head snapped up. A young woman with jet black hair and porcelain stood with her arm around another man. “If he’s that confident he’ll get you…it’s means he has others waiting in the wings.”

I snarled. “Three against one! Jeepers, that’s fair!”

“Who ever said I’d play fair?” the other vampire I thought I’d eluded stated from right behind me and I spun to face him, crying out in shock when he blew something sparkly into my eyes slashing blindly at him. “Grab her…” I heard him say softly and felt two sets of hands restrain me. “This is for your own good, darling…” he continued and I felt the pinch of a needle being pushed into my arm and I struggled against them fruitlessly.

“Hush…” the woman’s voice was growing faint and my legs were giving out beneath me. “It’ll all be okay, you’ll see…”

“Be gentle with her…” I heard the first vampire say and groaned when I felt someone lift me into their arms.

“I can smell Hunter on her, Doctor Felton…” the second male said in disgust.

“Stephen, if you harm her, I’ll kill you myself…no offense, Cara.” I heard the woman laugh quietly as he continued. “She’s mate to one of us…you’d deny him what you already have?”

“No.” the vampire identified as Stephen replied solemnly.

“Good…now help me get her to him.” Doctor Felton replied. “Oh…and we’ll need to grab some of her things…she lives two blocks from here.”

“Who’s her mate?” the woman asked softly and I felt someone touch my hair.

Doctor Felton sighed. “It’s R-” and then I lost consciousness.
