The bell rings, dismissing us for lunch. My head snaps up from my paper and I start to shove things in my bag, eager to leave the class. After spending the full class mulling over Parker's words, I needed some distance from the kid. My feet pick up a brisk pace in the hallway, only to slow down when his voice calls me.

"Vickie!" Pete calls from behind me.

"What, Pete?" I ask tiredly.

"Are you going to go to homecoming?" He asks, walking behind me. This was an odd question. I didn't usually go to dances, but Gwen was forcing me to come to this one. She had a "really good idea" apparently. Nevertheless, it was weird for Peter to ask me this question.

"Probably."

"Are you going with anyone?"

Rather than directly answering him, I say something completely different as Michelle's text flashes through my mind. "I don't like brunettes," I say with a roll of my eyes to the brown haired boy walking behind me. I was shooting down the arrows of his potential conquest: asking me. It's not narcissistic if you've gathered information for your assumption from other people. It isn't!

"You are one," he responds, the confusion clear in his voice.

"Your point?" I ask, turning around to face him and arching my eyebrow. This kid just couldn't take "no" for an answer. I figured I might as well just play a little with that.

"I just think it's odd," he replies awkwardly, shoving his hands into his jean pockets, "and kind of weird that you said that."

"Just making sure, Parker," I reply, walking away again.

"Of what?" he asks me.

"That you aren't going to think of asking any brunettes. I mean, you need my approval, right?" I reply teasingly, turning around and winking before briskly walking away. His gullibility is such a weakness. No wonder he supposedly likes a broken girl. He simply doesn't know better.

After a few seconds, Michelle comes up next to me saying, "Did you see his face?"

"No, why?" I answer haughtily. "I did what you said I couldn't do."

"Always have to prove everyone else wrong, don't you?" Michelle asks, sighing. "Sometimes, Vick, you can't see things two inches from your face. I mean, you're thinking of solving world problems when you can't even think of the kid who has been chasing you for such a long time. Think for a moment."

I reflect on what she says, stopping for a second. "I . . . think . . . you need to understand reality. This is a reality where Parker doesn't and will never like me. We're enemies. That's all it is."

Hey guys! How do you like this story so far? Comment and vote! I hope you all enjoy it. I have a few ideas.

Also, if you read the chapter "Denying Attraction" before 6/1/2018, you're going to want to go back and check the ending. I changed a little something. This story is going to get a lot more intense as time goes on probably.
