Slytherin table erupted into applause, as it had for every other student sorted into their house. But Cassiopeia didn't hear any of it. In fact, she felt like vomiting.

Numbly, she took off the hat and walked to Slytherin table, face pale and eyes wide in disbelief. She felt as if she was dreaming, as if this wasn't real. Making a point to sit as far away as possible from Draco Malfoy, Cass sat across from a rather pretty blonde girl with hazel eyes and a black haired boy with sharp green eyes.

She sat in a defensive position, eyes down as she clenched her jaw and tried not to get emotional. Not only was she the one member of her friend group that didn't get Gryffindor, she was apart of the one house that Ron seemed to hate, something he expressed often when he first explained the house system through letters.

The Slytherin table once again burst into applause, as apparently the next and last student to get sorted was in their house as well. He was tall, dark skinned, and sat nearby Draco.

As the sorting came to a close, followed by a round of polite clapping from all houses, a man that could only be the Headmaster stood and beamed at the students, arms opened wide as if he was attempted to embrace the whole of Hogwarts. He seemed delighted to look down upon the students seated in the Great Hall. He had a long, silvery beard that stretched down to his waist, and his hair in the back was that long as well. He wore half-moon spectacles, with royal purple robes and golden moons sewn into the fabric.

"Welcome!" He said, his voice echoing brilliantly across the Great Hall. Cass perked up at the voice, listening in intently as she tried to ignore the cold feeling in her chest.

"Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you." He sat down. Everyone clapped and cheered, but a majority of the first years looked downright confused.

To Cassiopeia's great surprise, before them a vast array of food had appeared. Roast beef, roast chicken, pork and lamb chops. Sausages, bacon and steak. Boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, fries, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup and peppermint humbugs. Cassiopeia grabbed a few small items, not exactly feeling hungry.

"So," spoke up the dark haired boy across from her, interrupting her thoughts, "you're Cassiopeia?"

"Yeah. What's it to ya?" She snapped, not in the mood for discussion.

To her disappointment, he and the girl laughed heartily.

"You know, I like you." He said with a smirk. "I'm Malcom. Malcom Hawthorne." He said, hand extended. Apprehensively, Cass shook it. Then the girl did the same and introduced herself as Emily Davis.

For awhile, the three chatted and Cass grew to like them. As she continued to talk to the Slytherins, her mood slowly began to lift. While still upset and disappointed, talking and making new friends cheered her up a smidge.

As they had chatted, dinner had vanished and dessert took it's place. Cass was currently simultaneously feasting on apple pie with a hearty scoop of ice cream on top while telling a funny story about her and Selena.

"And so, get this, I curse the guy out and storm off into Diagon Alley!" She laughed.

"No way!" Said Malcom, wide eyed.
"Yeah! That's how me and Selena met the Weasley clan." She said.

"You know the Weasleys?" Asked Emily.

"Yea, they're pretty fun. How do you known them?"

"They're a pureblood family, we all know each other." Shrugged Emily.
