Chapter 2

It took me a couple weeks, but I finally did it - I got down a routine for school days.

In the mornings, I would get ready, and Mr. Henderson would drive me to school. After school, I usually would grab a snack, do whatever homework I had that day, and then have supper. This way, I would get a couple hours of free time before bed.

After that first day of school, which was an easy day, I thought I would never be able to handle a normal day, but I think I've managed it pretty well so far. Back in Dellmere, I never had to do anything for a whole 8 hours straight, especially not go to school. School was about two hours a day for me.

"You look quite cheerful this morning," Mrs. Henderson questioned one morning. "Anything special?"

"No, nothing in particular." I shrugged, remembering that Damien had called last night. I hadn't talked to him since I had gotten here, and I missed him terribly.

Even though it was just a phone call, it was comforting to hear a familiar voice. It made me realize that I couldn't wait to go back home and get on with our engagement. I missed him so much and I was ready to continue my life as Princess with him at my side.

"Ready to go, Anastasia?"

Mr. Henderson put on his shoes and grabbed the keys from the counter. I nodded, checking to make sure I had all my books in my bag, and walked out the door behind him.

After he dropped me off at the school gates, I walked to my locker and switched out the textbooks and folders I brought home with the couple things I needed for calculus.

"Hey," Emily walked up to me. "How's it going?"

"I'm fine. How are you?" I gave Emily a smile.

"Great!" She exclaimed, looping her arm with mine as we walk towards our first class.

Emily and I had become close over the past couple weeks. We exchanged phone numbers (after convincing Mr. Henderson) and talked whenever possible. Her friends were also warming up to me, which made me feel less of an outsider.

"So are you going to the festival?" She asked once we had taken our seats.

"What festival?" I questioned.

"The end-of-the-summer festival! You have to go to it!"

"I don't know." I shrugged. I knew that if I wanted to go, I would have to ask Mr. Henderson.

"Oh, come on! Everyone goes to the festival! It's the best part about the beginning of the school year!" She exclaimed, telling me that it was tomorrow night and how much fun the past years had been.

"Good morning class." Mr. Roberts greeted us after the bell rang, placing a stack of papers on his desk. A few of the students replied to him. "I finished grading your baseline assessments."

A boy in the back of the class faintly whispered, "Took you long enough."

Mr. Roberts laughed. "I know. I know. I promised it wouldn't take this long, but you guys aren't the only ones trying to get back into school "

He grabbed the stack of papers he had placed on his desk and began to hand back the scantron sheets and the test questions.

He stopped at a boy in the back and frowned. "Evan, you could have done better."

His voice was filled with disappointment. Then he continued handing back the tests in silence.

Well, that is, until he stopped by me.
