THIRTEEN
Charcoal
I have a drawing pad about half as long as I am tall and twice as wide. It’s so large because I need a lot of space to draw the detailed drawings that I do. That sketchbook is full of my charcoal drawings. I love the soft, velvety look of charcoal...the warm dark grays and blacks of it...
I like drawing carefully shaded spheres and eggs, and once I attempted to capture my fish in motion, but I typically draw faces. Lots of detailed faces that reflect my mood. Sometimes I’ll just fill up an entire page with roughly sketched eyes.
For some reason I have countless pictures of a little curly-haired girl with tears in her eyes...all dated during my thirteenth year. When I draw her I press so hard on my charcoal pencil that half of it crumbles to dust. The dust smears over my drawing...and ruins it...
Well, I guess that’s charcoal for you...
