Tom's pov

I looked curiously at the girl standing in front of me. Severus, a friend despite being younger than me by two years, had told me about this one. She hung out with the Evans girl. He had told me despite trying several times he found her resistant to leglimency.

I tried to delve into her mind. At first I tried really light so that she won't feel any intrusion but after failing three times I tried harder. Still there was a complete block. It wasn't like hitting a wall, like with regular occlumency, this was like hitting a complete solid thing. Like her mind was made completely of solid substance with no space between the molecules. She seemed completely obvious.

Either she was a spectacular occlumence or she really didn't need to block. Maybe she was like Lupin, another Gryffindor Severus told me about. He was slightly different to read. His thoughts were a different flavour. He was a half breed but she wasn't one, was she? Maybe she wasn't human at all?

"You are a fourth year, aren't you?" I asked politely.

The girl looked at me. Hmm... She looked normal. Very human. Very ordinary.

"Yeah, Gryffindor"

"I'm sixth year Slytherin" I replied.

She laughed. Was she insane? What's funny about being in Slytherin?

"I think the entire female population of Hogwarts knows which year you are in" she said in a voice like windchimes.

I smiled. So even she knew about my popularity. Might be easier to delve into her past.

"Your parents?" I asked.

"My mother is dead. She had never married my dad. I see him from time to time" she said.

"My mum died as soon as I she gave birth to me. So I am not going to say I am sorry because I know how meaningless it sounds" I say betraying the right type of emotion.

She nods, understanding.

Hmm.... Patil was a pureblood name, so her mother was human. If it is her mother's maiden name. Then maybe it's the father? Well, why am I interested in her? She's too ordinary.

"My mother was disowned for having a child out of wedlock" she says.

"Mine was disowned for having married a muggle" I say simply.

Looks like we have at least two facts in common related with our mothers.

We reach the hall. Chatter spill out of the doors. I let her go in front as I don't want unnecessary attention.

After she enters the hall, I quickly walk towards the Slytherin table.

Daria's pov

I sat down near Lily. She turned to face me.

"Where were you and what happened?" she demands.

'I was dragged off by Sirius Black, you know, the guy who broke my heart and I still can't seem to get over? Yes, I was dragged off by him. I sort of nearly kissed him but didn't. I experienced a lot of emotional turmoil in a few minutes and realised that I might have feelings for Black which is stronger than a simple schoolgirl crush which I am sure, comes under self destructive behaviour. Oh, by the way, we were interrupted by the one and only Tom Riddle, star pupil of Hogwarts and protégé of old Sluggy. Did I mention that I am now sort of friendly with the most desirable man of Hogwarts? Wait! I did not!!! Because of how hopelessly romantic you are.... You will start squealing about how beautiful mine and Riddle's children will be'.
