"Do you want more?" Asked Pete staring at Ricki sitting on his legs.
"Don't make this kind of questions honey, I don't know...I just wanna follow what I feel. I just, you know..."
Ricki giggled feeling her heart skipping some fast beats "...I love you" Pete looked at her eyes enlarging and he started kissing her neck. Ricki totally melted under the touch of his warm, thin lips and, putting her hand behind his nape, she kissed his forehead and his nose until their lips met again for a longer lasting passionate kiss.
It seemed like nothing could separate them in that moment, nothing but the rumbling of the stomach.
They both laughed at the weird sound and understood it was time to eat.
They both kept touching their hands while eating, and their smiles were just as sweet as they were on the first days of marriage.
Later, Ricki put on her leather pants and a blue glittered t-shirt. She wore her usual make up and straightened her blonde hair. She kept smiling in front of the mirror, feeling good, willing to free more of her feelings. She never regretted anything, she never apologised and this time things wouldn't have been different. Once again at home she would have felt ready again to face a new life with less questions and doubts in her mind.
In the meantime Pete was talking to Maureen at the phone. He was concerned by the news of his father in law's health getting worse, but he also hoped he wouldn't die cause he wanted to enjoy his time with Ricki.
At the end of the call Pete felt weird. He wanted his wife to stay away just to spend time with his ex-wife. He was concerned yes, but somehow not really worried about what Maureen was telling him. Something strange was happening and he couldn't understand what. When he met Maureen, he was totally heartbroken because of Ricki. He remembered his friends pursuing him to go out for a night, leaving his children to a baby sitter just for some hours. It wasn't easy to have fun, he kept on thinking about that woman he was madly in love with and it was hard to accept she was gone. His thoughts divided between the hope to get her back and the surrender in front of a change of life. Maureen was the woman he hired as baby sitter and seeing his children happy with her, made him call her multiple times. They fastly became friends and spent time together until that time started becoming more and more intimate. When they first kissed, Linda seemed to be forgotten and the children were apparently happy again. But Ricki made some comebacks every now and then and she protested against the new woman in their house.
At first Pete acted angrily. At that time his way to react to Ricki was to put a wall of hate between them, it was the only way to repress their ended love. When things reached again a balance, Pete started behaving more nicely, but at a certain point that became a trap. All the repressed love was coming out again. Before the breakfast Pete was enjoying being kissed by Ricki, but after Maureen's call, he suddenly felt chained between his heart and his mind.He sat on the armchair holding his head between his hands and asking himself "What am I doing? What am I doing?"
"Honey, are you okay?" asked Ricki coming in the room. She sat next to Pete and took his hand away from his face. "Are you feeling sick?"
Pete looked at Ricki mentioning a smile. Ricki smiled too and, without even noticing, she was holding his hand.
"I'm okay" answered Pete "I was just wondering how life could have been if we had never left"
"A mess" replied Ricki getting up.
Pete stared at her "Why?"
"Because we were just too selfish. We were scared to lose all the things we were gaining in that moment and instead of adapting our life styles to each other, we let everything blew away"
Pete stayed silent.
"Living our lives on our own changed us.We solved many of our personal conflicts that didn't allow us to stay together. We are now two grown old adults that know how to manage their lives and not anymore two little lovers who thought that love was the only thing a marriage necessited to go on". Ricki continued. "But when I think about the three wonderful kids we've made, I know there's nothing to regret. We made no mistakes".
Pete felt lifted up hearing Ricki's words. Maybe that was the only chance he had to follow what his heart was suggesting. All the responsibilities obliged him to think and agree with his mind, but now it was the right moment to free any thought and to wrap his arms around the only woman he'd ever pined for.
"So" said Pete "I get we're not meant to be a couple..."
Ricki bit her lips watching Pete getting closer to her while speaking. "There's no way we can. We both are taken" she replied rolling her eyes.
Pete started kissing her hand and put it on his cheeck. Ricki giggled and at the same time she didn't know what was Pete's point.
Then Pete stared into her blue eyes and walked until he made Ricki sit on the table. Ricki smiled brazenly as she felt Pete's hands caressing her tummy under her t-shirt, softly tickling her. He had not touched her for years and now he could feel how much her skin had changed. It was more tender and less thick, Ricki had also taken a few extra pounds since the last time he touched her, but Pete didn't care at all and whispered "I love you" laying his head on her chest.
Ricki didn't answer. She just hooked her finger under Pete's chin and nipped his lower lip. "I need you to be my lover" she said in a very low voice, almost miming the words.
Pete nodded and kissed her, holding her tight, enjoying the sensation of her hands running through his hair.
His phone soon rang again. At first Pete ignored it and kept on kissing his ex wife, but calls seemed to insist and Ricki let him answer.
