"My parents died when I was 8, my dad died from a heart attack and not too long after, my mom died by sliding on an icy road and into a freezing cold lake while being drunk." I explain, "I had a sister, her name was Maddison, and she was 10 at the time, and really needed our parents or anyone that could explain what was happening."
I pause for a second, knowing the next part might get a bit harder to say for me. I'm getting closer to the incident, and I can barely think about it usually without hyperventilating.
"Not too long after we were put into an orphanage, Rosie and Harvey adopted us. They seemed nice, but I was beyond wrong about that." I continued, "The only reason that took us in, was so they looked better in front of their parents. Taking in two girls after their parents died, made them seem awesome, but really, they are just cruel people who deserve to die."
"Maddison would always try to protect me when they would try to hit me, but sometimes, she couldn't and the beating would just be worse than it originally would have been," I say and take a deep breath.
Here goes nothing.
"I guess I became too much for her because, about 4 years ago when she was 16 and I was 14, she killed herself by hanging herself of the ceiling fan. I found her that morning just hanging there, her face beyond pale. The night before, she had given me a package, and said not to open it until the sadness became too much." I said.
He looked at me with sadness and concern. Tears were starting to burn in my eyes and my voice broke at the end of the last sentence, but I still went on.
"Rosie and Harvey didn't care. It was the most perfect thing to them. One less child to feed and an excuse to move away from that horrible town. So, we moved, and a month or so later, the beatings were getting worse and I was starting to blame myself for everything that happened. The sadness becoming almost un-bearable."
I look up at him, and his eyes grow wide as he realizes what's coming next.
"I open the package and found the blade I use to this day and a note in Maddison's handwriting. I remember every single word from it. 'Dear Rebecca,' it read, 'I couldn't handle it anymore. I just couldn't. If what our parents said was right about us being exactly alike, then you'll be where I am soon enough. I used this to make my scars and punish myself for everything. It took away my pain; it might take away yours. Love, Maddison.'"
I start sobbing into my hands. He squeezes me tighter, making sure not to hit my wrists.
"S-She was telling me to hurt myself, to kill myself." I sob, "My own sister."
"She wasn't in her right mind Rebecca," Kyler tells me.
"But she's right, I deserve to die," I whisper so low, I'm surprised he heard me.
He moves me a bit so I'm looking right at him before whispering,
"Rebecca, you are the smartest, prettiest, strongest, nicest, person I have ever met. You deserve the world and more. You don't deserve anything that you've gotten so far. You deserve happiness, not pain and sadness. Your sister was wrong. You don't deserve to die."
He kisses my forehead before whispering, "You deserve to live."
