[future; batman universe w/ Gotham as a prequel]
How dare he.
How dare he.
How dare this man.
Oswald simply couldn't process it.
Edward had disappeared completely for the past four years, and now, here he was, clear as day.
Oswald hoped his eyes were deceiving him. He'd spent too many nights drinking too much, pondering if Edward was still alive or dead, pondering the fact he'd wasted the past eight or so years stuck on this man and was continuing to waste them... Too many mornings and nights remembering how it'd felt when Edward was asleep next to him and loneliness stung too painfully in Oswald's chest... How dare he.
Oswald observed in disbelief, wondering whether or not to approach Edward. How could he even react?
The bartender made an obvious motion towards Oswald, handing him a glass of red wine. "The gentleman over there," the bartender gestured to Edward, "paid for this and told me to give it to you."
Oswald never even looked at the bartender, eyes narrowed into slits. "Oh, did he now?" Oswald muttered under his breath, realizing Edward had made eye contact with him.
Edward raised an eyebrow. He was smirking. Everything they'd gone through in the past eight years and Edward had the audacity to smirk at him.
Oswald felt sick. And mistreated. And manipulated. And furious. He debated not even reacting. Ignoring Edward's existence entirely and trying to forget this encounter ever even happened. But against his best interests, he walked over to Edward in the midst of the Wayne Gala.
Edward was standing against a wall, dressed well in a very dark shade of green, white shirt and black tie. Must've been expensive. Oswald wondered how Edward could possibly be funded, maybe he'd been racking up money during his four year long disappearance.
Oswald neared up, backing against the wall without making eye contact. They stood like that for a while before Oswald's anger made him break the silence. "What do you want?" He hissed coldly, still not daring to look at Ed.
Edward chuckled. "I can't speak to you unless I want something?"
How dare he. Oswald wanted to hold everything back, but it was getting increasingly difficult. "I'm fine without you," Oswald said, trying to sound emotionless, "My old naïve self thought I couldn't live without you, but I'm perfectly happy without you, and you shouldn't know that."
Edward expected Oswald to be hurt. Of course he would be. After Jeremiah cut the bridges all those years ago, and Gotham descended into chaos, after Edward died at Lee's hands... He and Oswald finally recognized their feelings. Then things got... Confusing. He hadn't intended to be gone for four years, but he couldn't change the past. "I've missed you."
Oswald bit his lip hard, eyes narrowed into slits. "You left me. All alone. Without a clue to where you were, what you were doing, i-if you were alive?"
Edward frowned, knowing it'd be like this when he made his return. "I-"
"I moved on from you, Nygma." Oswald hissed his name with pure disgust. "I don't need you anymore."
"You're a liar," Edward mused, trying not to feel crushed, "you'll always need me." He forced a smug smile.
Oswald bit his lip. "So what do you want?"
Edward chuckled. "Like I said, I have to want something?"
"You've been gone for four years, you must want something." Oswald muttered.
Edward smiled. "I don't want anything from you." He moved closer, tracing Oswald's cheek. "I want you."
Oswald slapped his hand away. "Fuck off. I don't need you here spouting bullshit. Why do I even- I-I'm leaving!"
Edward grabbed him by shoulders, trying to hold him in place without causing a scene. "We need each other to survive. You and I always find a way back to each other. We need each other."
Oswald was breathing slightly faster, trying to back away. "I've been fine without you."
Edward leaned in closer, smirking. "Exactly. You've been fine."
Oswald closed his eyes, shivering as Edward held him in place, breathing on his neck. "W-what are you getting at?"
"Together we are so much better off, don't you think?" Edward purred, nestling against Oswald. "Except this time, we can make sure we don't experience interruptions."
"Interruptions?" Oswald whispered, no longer interested in trying to escape.
"They've been trying to break us apart, haven't they? Everyone we've known over the years?" Edward nipped at Oswald's ear. "That's because they were so scared of what we could do together. When we kiss, James Gordon wakes up in a cold sweat. Together we'll have Gotham on it's knees."
Oswald blushed. "I-I love it when you talk like that."
"I know you do. I missed this, you know? Being partners in crime. I've missed you." Edward leaned in closer again before being pushed away suddenly.
"I hate you," Oswald hissed, "I hate you so much. I hate you for everything you've done previous to leaving and I hate you for leaving. And I hate you for trying to fool me so easily again."
Edward narrowed his eyes. "I'm not fooling you. All my life I've been blinded but now I see I need you and you need me and fate invented us to do something- something spectacular, my love! Together."
Oswald forced a smile. "I'm not yours, Ed! You think I'm just going to crawl back to you?! After you abandoned me?" Edward took in a shaky breath as Oswald neared him, fury in his eyes. "I have no idea what on earth what you've been doing but it must've been far more important than me you so dearly claim you cannot survive without."
Edward bit his lip. "I know it was cruel-"
"It was!" Oswald hissed. "So spare me your sermons about love."
"I can't change me having left but I'll never leave you again!" Edward promised. "You're all I need."
Oswald handed Edward the drink, frowning. "I'm done, Ed. Here's your wine."
Edward grabbed Oswald's wrist as he tried to pull away, slotting Oswald up against him. "Let me prove it to you. Please. However long it takes."
Oswald chuckled sarcastically. "Edward. I'm finished. I don't care anymore. And you know how it feels? Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. Maybe you should try it."
Edward gripped his wrist harder, feeling desperate. "Please."
Oswald slipped his wrist away, turning to face Edward. "I guess if you're around... You're..." He trailed off before leaning in, pressing a kiss against Edward's cheek, resting there for a moment. He pulled away with a wink. "Just so Jim wakes up in a cold sweat."
He walked off, heading quickly into the crowd. Edward smirked smugly, eyes narrowing. "You've still got it for me, Ozzie." He whispered without audience.
