The day finished slower than I would've liked, but still it finished. I walked out of the entrance towards the parking lot, I honestly doubt that I'll be getting picked up so I decided to find a bus stop
As I was leaving the grounds a car pulled up beside me, "Hey there Blondie, want a ride?" Hunter appreared as the window rolled down.
"No thanks, I'm fine with catching the bus" I kept walking and spotted a bus stop across the road ahead.
His car drove with my pace, "Come on Eb, I won't bite" he flashed his row of white teeth
I bit the inside of my cheek, contemplating. It would save me time since I needed to go out and find a job.
"Uh, yeah ok"
He stopped the car and I dove into the passenger seat, buckling my seatbelt
"So where are we heading?"
I explained the route, but only told him which street to go to, I didn't want him knowing exactly where I lived. You could say I have some trust issues.
The awkward atmosphere was making me cringe, I wringed my hands together trying to calm myself down.
"Are you liking Cali so far?" he broke the silence
"It's alright" I've changed since I last lived here, I was grateful that no one noticed me. I was only twelve and I never really went to school anyway
He turned on the radio and tapped his thumbs to the sound of the beat. I looked out the window and I recognised the familiar street to the apartments.
"This street doesn't have any houses down it?" Hunter seemed confused
He was right too, this neighbourhood was lurky and the apartment building was down this small road that only contained these old and empty shops, a massive field and a huge broken down building that used to be a cotton gin factory, I used to go there when I was a kid, things would get rough at home and I would be there for hours, drying out my tears.
"Yeah, I'm actually looking for work so I thought that I'd look down here" I lied
"I don't think you're going to find much down there, but a buddy of mine's got a restaurant not far from here and he's recruiting people at the moment, I can take you there if you want"
"You mean like waitressing?"
"Yeah, as opposed to what?" he laughed
I breathed out a laugh as well, "Yeah, I guess, thanks"
He went to the dead end of the street and made a u-turn heading towards this restaurant.
''Why do you need a job?"
"Don't you have one?"
"No, I don't really need one I guess" he shrugged
"I was thinking of joining a gym, and I need money to pay the fees" It's true, everywhere I went when I left to a different foster home I would get a job and join a gym around the area. I wouldn't be at the home for long though so it was hard but I managed to get time in.
"Oh" he grew quiet, he was probably wondering why I wouldn't just get my parents to pay the fees.
"Well, here it is" he turned into a car park, the restaruant was actually quite nice, it had a sign that read Duke's Bar & Grill.
He parked the car and we simultaneously opened the car door. When we walked in the music was playing and there were people sitting at booths and tables, also some drunk men sitting at the bar, when they saw me they started yelling out to me, beckoning for me to come over.
