The sound of footsteps trampling through my home was all that I could hear, and they were getting closer. I couldn't tell how many people were there but I knew that there was too many, I wouldn't be able to get past them if I tried. The shattering of glass echoed through the house and a whimper that I tried so hard to keep in, escaped from my mouth.
"Ssshhh, baby it's ok" my mother softly whispered, she was not only trying to convince me, but herself as well.
I felt numb yet I managed to lift my arm and place my hand over my mouth, attempting to not let any more noise erupt.
Mother held me close, rocking our bodies back and forth in a calming motion. I tried closing my eyes, just praying that this was all a nightmare. But the darkness and dust of the small closet that we both squeezed into, reminded me of my situation.
"WHERE THE FUCK IS HE" a man yelled furiously.
His voice startled me and I flinched, my elbow went back and hit the wall, making a loud 'thump'.
Our breathing hitched and everything slowed down as a pair of black boots became visible through the crack of the door.
"Axel, in there" a new person spoke.
Twists and turns of the doorknob were made but the door didn't budge
"I know you're in there, come out now!" the guy kicked the door in frustration.
Mother grabbed my chin softly, making me face her. I could only just see her from the light seeping inside, her eyes were red and puffy and her skin was pale, mirroring what I must've looked like. She brought her other hand up, placing her finger against her lips, signalling to be quiet.
She gave me a sad smile and mouthed the words 'I love you' as she rose to her feet, steadying herself. Before I realised what she was doing she flicked the lock and turned the handle, only opening the door enough to fit her fragile body through.
The guy that was trying to open the door, Axel, chuckled under his breath.
"Hey Nigel, get boss, tell him we've found something" Axel sneered, never taking his eyes off of my mother.
The guy Nigel walked swiftly out of the room lowering his gun, and before anything else could be said, footsteps began to make their way back again and a man who I guessed was the leader stepped through and began observing my mother.
"Hmmm" he hummed, taking a few steps towards her.
I looked through the crack of the door again, trying to not be seen or make any sudden movements.
The men wore black hoodies and long black pants with boots. The leader was the scariest of them all; he had a scar on his face and from what I could see, he had a tattoo coming up from his neck which seemed to look like a cobra.
My mother was shaking with fear but she tried her best to hide it. "Please" my mother begged, "He's not here, he knew that you were coming" she explained, pleaded.
"He's gone" she said last, barely above a whisper.
The leader took another step forward, now he was centimetres away from her face and she flinched from instinct.
"Maybe this will send him a message then" he spoke calmly, leaning forward and whispering it in her ear, although loud enough to be heard.
"Grab her" he ordered Axel taking a step away and pulling out his gun. She stepped backwards holding up her hands, saying 'no' over and over again.
But Axel grabbed her wrists and held them behind her back. Everything seemed to be going fast forward now, he held up the gun to her head, then it clicked, being switched off safety mode.
