The boys are staying at your house for a few days while they come to visit around America on their break. You know them through Liam, who's been your best friend (and crush) your whole life. In the past few years, Liam has had so much to do with the band, and you've moved to America with your family, but the two of you manage to keep in touch. Your friendship thankfully never came to an end just because he got famous.

One of the nights that the boys are staying with you, Louis, Niall, Zayn and Harry decide to go out to a bar and get a few beers [A/N-Pretend the drinking age in America is 18 c; lol], but Liam wants to stay at your house with you. He was never much of a drinker. So you and Liam stay home alone, just talking for a little while. After about an hour, Liam starts to get awkward and clears his throat.

"Uh, [Y/N]..." he begins, scratching the back of his neck nervously. "I want to talk to you about something."

"I'm all ears," you reply with an inviting smile.

He avoids eye contact as he speaks, looking mostly at the floor. "I've wanted to say this for awhile, but I just don't know how to say it. And I don't even think I should be saying it, because I really don't want to ruin our friendship, but I can't help it anymore. I like you, a lot. Like more than a friend." You're in shock and the smile drops right off of your face in alarm as he continues. "I've tried to get over it, but it's no use. The feelings never go away and--"

"Liam..." you interrupt before it gets too crazy.

He looks up at you. "Yes?"

It breaks your heart to see his hopeful expression. "Liam, I'm so, so sorry...I know how you feel. I just don't think I can do that, it just wouldn't work, and I can't handle..." you stutter and drift off, struggling to get any decent words out. Tears quickly start forming in your eyes. What are you saying? This is what you always wanted to happen. And now you look like an idiot for crying over nothing.

"[Y/N], it's okay--" Liam moves closer to you and holds out his arms, offering a hug as he sees you crying.

"No, it's not okay," you back away from him. "I'm an idiot. This is all my fault. I'm--I'm sorry, Liam, I'm sorry," you turn around with and run upstairs to your room with tears running down your face, closing the door behind you. You immediately jump onto your bed and cry into your pillow, confused. Liam was being so sweet and kind and all you did was break his heart. Even when you turned him down, he stayed strong in front of you, not seeming the slightest bit upset and was only worrying about your sadness. You curse yourself a million times; why did you have to get so scared and screw up a relationship with one of the best guys on the face of the Earth? You cry yourself to sleep on your bed.

You wake up an hour later with an extra blanket on top of you and the door to your bedroom cracked. You somehow know that it was Liam's doing, and you smile internally at his kindness. Then, remembering what had happened, you start to get angry with yourself again.

To cheer yourself up, you grab a bright pink nail polish from your nightstand and begin painting your toenails. While you're working on your pinky, you see your door open slightly by the corner of your eye and turn to face it. When you see Liam's head pop out, you smile, deciding to not bring up what had happened earlier.

"Oh, it's you," you say warmly.

Liam grins, seeming relieved at your friendliness. "Yep. I heard you get up and wanted to come, erm, check on you."

"Come sit down with me," you tell him as you pat your hand on your bed.

He sits beside you on your bed and looks down at your hands. "What are you up to?"

"Just finishing up my nails," you answer as you paint the last toenail.

He stops talking and you look up at him to see him smiling at your nails.

"Why do you look so intrigued?" you ask him with a chuckle.

"Oh, nothing. The way you do things is just interesting to me."

You stare at him looking at your feet and notice how cute and innocent he looks, and how sweet he naturally is. His eyes look as if they're full of happiness, but as time progresses, you can see past it. He's obviously hurting but is afraid to say anything.

After looking at him for awhile, you can't take being a jerk. You know that you were responsible for his heartache, and you have to say something. "Liam, I want to apologize for earlier."

"You don't have to apologize for anything," he looks up at you and when his big, brown eyes meet yours, you start to feel weak at the knees.

"Yes, I do. I acted like a child. It's just that, for some reason I got scared, and--"

"Love, it's fine. I shouldn't have even brought it up. Don't worry about it at all. I'll get over it soon enough," Liam assures you.

"But that's the thing. I don't want you to get over it."

A frown of confusion appears on his face. "Why not?"

You set your hand on his thigh. "Because I like you too."

He looks down at your hand, inspecting it. "Then why--"

"I was afraid," you blurt out quickly. "I was afraid of being with you, and I always have been. I've had a crush on you for as long as I can remember, but with us being such close friends, and you being famous, I didn't want to interfere or do anything that might mess up your career. I know how much it means to you. And if I took time away from you, I would never forgive myself."

He takes one of your hands and holds it in both of his, staring you in the eyes. "Babe, I'd rather spend time with you than anyone else. You aren't interfering at all. If anything, being with you would make my life even better."

You genuinely smile at him and finally do what you've been wanting to do for years, pulling his lips to yours for a short but sweet kiss. "You have no idea how much that means to me," you reply in a whisper. "I've been waiting for this for so long."

"I wish I had known how you felt earlier, because I never thought you'd feel the same way about me," he admits.

"Liam James Payne, you are hands down the most caring and considerate person I have ever met in my life. The girl that you like is the luckiest person in the world, so I don't know how you could think that I don't like you back. But that lucky girl is also pretty stupid if she turns you down, which was me about an hour ago," you pause for a moment, thinking about how to put your thoughts into words. "I sure as hell don't deserve you, but if you're willing to make the mistake of dating me, I won't argue."

Liam grins and looks as if he's in deep thought before responding with the cutest thing you could ever imagine. "There's no other girl that I'd rather be my perfect mistake."
