You're sitting in a public recreation center in Mullingar, your hometown. There are many different rooms in it, like arcade rooms, movie rooms, music rooms etc. The music room was always your favorite. The walls, ceiling and floor are all white, and it has so many different instruments in it. It has a small stage at the front of the room, which is where all the instruments sit. This is because people do small gigs here sometimes. The music room is always open the latest, and also the least visited room. You go there almost every night to be alone and get lost in your music.
This night at around 11:00 p.m. in particular, you're sitting on a stool practicing some songs on guitar. The chairs in the audience are hidden in the pitch-black darkness and the stage is lit up with a single light switch. After you perfect 'Wonderwall' by Oasis, you set the guitar down and look around the stage. Your eyes stop at a grand, dark black piano. You walk over to sit down at the piano, which you haven't played recently. You start off a bit rusty, but your fingers slowly start to remember the notes to 'A Thousand Miles' by Vanessa Carlton.
"Making my way downtown, walking fast, faces pass and I'm homebound," you start singing as your fingertips trail their way around the piano keys. "Staring blankly ahead, just making my way, making my way through the crowd.."
You change chords on the piano while singing the words, "I need you." When you open your mouth to sing the next line, another voice cuts you off by singing it for you.
"I miss you," you hear someone sing the next part of the song. You had no idea anyone else was here, so your face shows confusion as you mouth the words he says, no sound coming out.
"And now I wonder..." you finish before starting the chorus and looking around cautiously as you do. "If I could fall into the sky, do you think time would pass me by?"
"'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles," another voice sings.
"If I could just see you..." you laugh a little as you try to look through the darkness, realizing the lyrics you're saying actually apply to the situation.
"Tonight," the two of you sing in harmony, and it sounds beautiful. You can tell it's a man's voice, but that's pretty much it. You begin to get very curious as to who it is.
For the next few weeks, whoever it was comes to the music room every night, and never speaks at all; he usually joins into a song with you, two songs if you're lucky. You still never see him, though. You figure he must be hiding in the dark audience, and you COULD go looking for him, but you like the whole 'mysterious singer' thing. His voice is absolutely beautiful, and it mesmerizes you to hear him sing. The weird thing is that the voice sounds all too familiar to you, but you just can't put your finger on who exactly it sounds like.
After a few weeks of him singing along with you every night, he stops coming. The first night he didn't come, you know it's likely that he just had something important going on. However, he doesn't come after a whole three months. You start to get really disappointed, and decide to stop going to the rec center altogether.
One night, about five months after he first came to the music room, you go because you realize you've really missed it the past month you haven't gone. You tell yourself you'll only come this once, just to enjoy it once more. You don't want to keep coming because it only reminds you of that lad that used to come. After about five songs on the piano, you walk up to the front of the stage to sit on the stool that's there with the guitar. You start the first chords of the slow ballad 'I Won't Give Up' by Jason Mraz.
"When I look into your eyes," you begin singing. "It's like watching the night sky, or a beautiful sunrise; there's so much they hold..." you drift off and pause for a minute, used to having him come in in the middle of the verse. You sigh when you realize he's not going to show, and open your mouth to start singing.
