[Hanahaki Disease AU]
The Hanahaki Disease is the growing of flowers in the lungs, then coughing and throwing them up. The disease occurs when there is unrequited romantic love between two people.
Grayson was lucky enough to never get the disease. He was always generally afraid of it. The disease was never deadly, just slightly bloody. And it was always interesting when his friend Alex coughed up a petal or two before hurrying off to the bathroom.
Now Reece on the other hand was a constant victim. He would see the silver haired boy in the hallway, then almost choke on the usual orchid petals that would quickly begin to rise in his throat.
Orchid- Admiration, Innocent Love
He would hide in the boy's bathroom, throwing up orchids until he couldn't feel them anymore. When he flushed them down the toilet, and left the stall to clean himself up, there would always be one bloody petal stuck to his chin. He hated the disease that he so easily caught from this boy that would never love him back.
Then by the time the day ended, and drama club practice was after school. He would watch his crush flirt with another girl. His voice would sound like his sinuses were blocked by the time he finished his scenes and he couldn't sing like he usually could. Then he would run off and go puke up all of the orchid petals, rose petals, and blood that felt like they would never stop coming. Carter, his best friend would follow suit, gently rubbing his back until he let out a small sob in pain once he finished.
Rose- Jealousy Over Another's Love
Grayson always wondered why Reece got so sick. He never knew that the small cough from Reece and a small orchid petal would pop out would be because of him. Sometimes he tried to hide it, especially around Gray. He never expected it to be because of himself.
Riley herself had gotten sick once before, but her love eventually died. She only had ever thrown up orchids, and even then it wasn't that bad. She had a ginormous crush on Grayson, but hadn't gotten sick. "Maybe he loves me back!" She squealed to her friend, Annabelle.
"Have you gotten sick yet?" Annabelle asked with a curiously raised eyebrow. She didn't believe it, especially with the way Grayson is so silently curious with Reece and his mysterious running away.
"No." Riley coughed slightly into her arm. She moved her arm away to find a not fully bloomed lilac petal in the crease of her elbow.
"Well that says otherwise. We all know you and Gray sneak around during practice. So you might want to go empty out the rest of the flowers then find out what Lilacs mean." Annabelle informed, watching Riley get up and head to the bathroom.
Riley kept letting lilac petals into a toilet, almost in tears for multiple reasons. As soon as she cleaned her blood away, she googled what the lilac meant, and she knew it couldn't be good.
Lilac- False Love
Grayson found Reece in the bathroom before the end of practice, puking up his guts and crying from pain and sadness. He hated the feeling of the flowers in his throat, and the blood feeling like it was going to suffocate him. Yet, it wasn't the usual orchid or rose petal. When Reece saw the white Jasmine petals with a slight red tint, he was very unsure of what it meant.
"Reece, are you okay?" His breath hitched at the deep voice. He held the rest of his flowers down until he could stand up. Reece gently shook his head, very certain that he was about to let more of the jasmine leave his system. Then his legs just about gave out.
Gray caught him, then set him back down by the toilet in the handicapped stall so he could comfort Reece. "Why are you so sick? Is it that, um, Hanahaki disease or something?" He asked softly.
Reece simply gave him a weak nod, then continued to throw up. "I-It's terrible. I've been dealing w-with it for years." He said in between coughing fits. Gray sighed softly. He never felt the pain that Reece has, and he felt really bad about it.
Gray kept him company, then gave him a towel to get rid of the blood and flowers on his chin. Gray got his phone out, wanting to kind of help. "What flowers were they?" He asked.
"White Jasmine." Reece replied, running a hand through his hair with a small sigh. Gray typed in the words "White Jasmine Hanahaki " and pressed "enter"
White Jasmine- Confused Love
Reece hasn't thrown up since the moment in the bathroom, yet, he was still head over heels for Gray. He was confused as to why, because he was positive Gray didn't feel the same. Grayson kept giving him small smiles, then looking away when Reece looked at him.
Grayson was expecting to get sick in the next few minutes if he kept watching Reece. He hadn't thrown up, but his breath hitched in his throat, and he couldn't stop smiling.
Later that day, Reece bumped into Grayson in the hallway. Reece didn't let an orchid escape his mouth, because none were there. "Good to know you aren't sick anymore." Gray smiled, looking down at him. "Meet me at my car after school, we need to talk."
When Gray walked away and covered his mouth to cough. One single Hollyhock flower popped out and into his hand. It was clean, and he felt no pain in his throat. He researched as he walked, finding out the answer to his question. Reece coughed as well. The same clean, small, pink Hollyhock into his hand, and he almost screamed because he knew exactly what it meant.
Hollyhock- Equal Love
Gray was leaning on the hood of his car as he waited for Reece. The Hollyhock was still in his hand, and he looked down at it, smiling softly. Once he looked up, he could see Reece walking towards his car with a similar small smile. "Took you long enough." Gray joked.
"W-Why is there a flower in your hand?" Reece stuttered as he stopped in front of Gray.
"My first and hopefully last encounter with Hanahaki." Gray chuckled. "I coughed it up after we walked away earlier today. But this was it. It means equal love." He said quietly.
"O-Oh." Reece blushed darkly. "I had one too. Does that mean you like me too?" He asked with bright eyes and a hopeful smile.
"Obviously. I fell for you Reece, flower petals and all." Gray smiled, watching the smaller boy dart his eyes down to Gray's lips, then back up. "Do you want me to kiss you?" He laughed slightly, which made Reece giggle and stutter out a "yeah".
So Gray leaned in.
