"What's going on?" Baylor asked as she sat up in her seat looking out at the hundreds of cars that blocked the interstate. People scrambled around everywhere in a dangerous mix with zombies that came at them. "There's no way we're getting passed this," I said looking at the review mirror at the sleeping toddler who should be in a car seat. "Take that trail through the woods I know where it goes," Baylor said pointing to the left of us. I turned off the road and took on the bumpy road. "Watch out!" Baylor yelled as someone ran in front of the car. I stopped the car as the woman soaked in blood waved her arms around. She was about to run and jump into the car when 4 freaks ran onto the road and sunk their teeth into her. "Go! Now!" Baylor screamed. "We have to help her!" I yelled taking off my seat belt. "No Exora! Don't you understand?! She's already dead! If you're bitten you become one of them. There's no saving her now but there's still time for us." I peeled my eyes off of the bloody scene and tried to ignore her cries for help. Tears clouded my vision as I pressed on going futher into the woods.
"Where exactly does this lead?" I asked the teenager beside me. "It's a back road back into town but there's a convienient store up here too. We can get some diapers for the kiddo." I nodded and kept driving quickly up the rocky path. "I don't know about this," I said as we reached the small store. "Come on Exora we have a long road ahead of us and I'll be damned if we die because the little tike is screaming about his wet nappie," she said before emerging out of the car. I sighed as I looked to the sleeping child in the back. I got out of the car flinching when I locked it hearing the loud beep. "lets do this fast, in and out," I said as I reached for the door handle of the store. I pulled on it but it was locked. "Ugh their closed let's go before the zombie owner comes out," I said turning towards the car. "There's a ton of useful stuff in there! There's no police in this apocalypse Exora," she said just when a loud crash sounded out in result of the harsh blow she delivered to the glass door with a propane tank. "This is reckless they'll come right to us with all this noise," I said looking around frantically for zombies. "All the more reason to hurry up," She said before slipping through the broken glass.
"Hurry up we need to go!" I said as I ran towards the car with my arms full of packages of diapers and wipes. "You're not the one carrying a 10 pound box of loot Exora!" She yelled at me as she hurried to the car. Zombies had found their way to us and were surrounding the store. I threw open the car door and tossed the packages in before jumping inside as Baylor did the same. "I wasn't able to get much of anything because of those assholes!" She yelled flipping off the zombie that crowded her window. "It's fine, we're fine," I said taking a deep breath as I reached for my key in my pocket. My eyes widened as I felt around my pocket for my key. "Oh my gosh," I said as I searched myself in a panic. "What?! What's wrong?!" She asked as I looked towards the crowd of zombies coming out of the woods. "My key! I must've set it down somewhere in the store." I hit the stirring wheel angrily and laid my head in my hands. "Dammit!" She cursed hitting the window with her fist. "I-I don't know what to do," I said worriedly as they started banging on the window. "Move over I know how to hot wire a car," Baylor said as she reached over. "What? No! You'll ruin my car," I said. "Well it's either the car or us princess peach," She said to which I scooted over and let her do her thing. "Baylor..." I trailed off as more freaks joined in on the pursuit. "I'm almost done," she said as they began to beat on the car harder waking Asher from his nap. "Wahhhhh wahhh mamamah!" He cried looking at the windows that were blocked by zombies with malice in their eyes.
"Done!" She said just before I slammed on the gass running down the creeps infront of us derailing my car making it swerve a little casing Baylor and I to scream. "Hang a left!" She yelled to which I took a sharp left deeper into the woods. "Where to now?" I asked her. "I don't know another way out of town," She said. "We need to build base somewhere or something maybe the military will rescue us," she said as she clutched onto the handle to her right as I drove over a large bump. "The military nearly shot me it of a window this morning," I said doubting anyone could help us now with the little information that is known about this outbreak.
"There's a cabin my grandpa used to own a few miles out," she said suddenly. "Is it safe?" I asked not that she would have a clue. "It's a place to hang our hats for the night. The sun is setting fast and night time will be more dangerous than anything. Floor it, I think we can make it within the hour." I did as she said and went 80 all the way down the path that led into the moutain. "Hey squirt don't cry," Baylor said to Asher as he continued to sob in fright. There will definitely be a lot of that on this journey.
My exhaustion is definitely getting to me at this point. I'm finding it exceedingly difficult to even keep my eyes open. On and on I kept driving up the mountain and I would continue to do so for the next half hour. I believed that maybe my luck had changed and I'd be able to break free from the dangerous beings for a while, but then an even larger problem arose. As if things couldn't possibly get any worse my gas light went on.
