I dodged the punch aimed for my face by turning and jabbing my sparring partner in her unguarded left side. She may stand two feet taller than me and be way bulkier, but I'm faster and I know it.She aims a high kick at my face. . I dodge by ramming forward into her other leg. She topples over and I roll away so I don't get crushed.
DING!
The bell that finishes the round gets rung by the ref.
"Looks like another win for Valyn, fifth win of the day."
I stand up and punch my fists in the air to show that I won. I get of the sand sparring ring and walk out of the sun into the shade where my best friend, Jalie, was watching me. She has pale skin and light brown curly hair. She's standing in the same spot she stands every day waiting for me to destroy everyone in hand to hand combat, in the shade because she does not tan but burns unlike me.
"Good job, today. You are undefeated, like pretty much every other day," she says to me as we head to the communal fountain.
We are inside a very big triangular courtyard. The closest side is the training rooms, where we have all our lessons. The next one is for the dormitories and the smallest side is where the meetings about our fate of becoming a Xiaka get decided. I'm the best of my generation so I know that I will be probably assigned to protect someone in the royal family that I hate  They are the reason for the death of my parents.
"Are okay? You're making that weird face that you make when you're angry," Jalie asked concerned.
"I'm fine," I reply sweetly.
She looks unconvinced but nods and walks towards the meeting rooms.
"Where are we going?" I ask.
She puts her pointer finger to her lips to tell me to shut up. I nod understandingly, because I know  she usually likes to eavesdrop on the headmaster and she's always aware of what's going to happen. Most of the time I don't go with her but this time I follow silently. I follow her down the stone wall and she stops when we arrive under a window. We don't have glass windows because that's considered not being in touch with nature so all the windows are just a gap in the wall with metal bars. I know that at the palace there are glass windows for more privacy. Jalie points at her ears as if to say listen, so I do.
"With Jurthera opening its doors to the rest of the world we are going to need more Xiakas to defend the country and protect the royal family," says Edra, leader of the Xiakas as well as one of our  best, then pauses "the prince is going on a mission to more technologically advanced countries to learn from them and bring back new ideas. I want a Xiaka around his age to travel with him and protect him."
The news shocks me, the beloved prince of  Jurthera is leaving the country? I've met him before but barely even saw what he looked like. He's around my age ,18 ,and he  is such a wimp. I hate him , his family, as well as anything to do with themI dig my mind trying to remember his name but nothing comes, so I start listening again.
"I'll have my best put on a team to protect him," I hear the headmaster of the school say, with a tiredness in her voice.
"I need one person to be his personal guard," tells Edra.
" I have just the woman for the job, her name is Valyn."
