_____________________I sat up to find Lydia, Sam and Taryn standing over me with worried looks on their faces. As I finished processing the information, Tanith ran up to us. After seeing me awake and well again, they sighed sighs of relief.
"Lydia tells me you lost your memory and are slowly regaining it. How far have you remembered?" Sam asked.
"Hadrich. The giant one. Sorry I passed out, it was a memory coming back." I looked up. "How long was I out?"
"An hour or so. You good to stand?" Taryn asked.
I nodded and stood up. I looked around, saw that I was just within the tree, and started to walk. "Taryn, Where can I sleep? I'm not gonna sleep right now, but I need to know where I can."
"Over here, Jack." She led me over to a doorway. "Farthest room down to the left."
"Ok, Taryn. Thanks. Now, what do I do here? Is there some one I should talk to?"
"As the coming High Prince of the Light Fae, you're in charge." I stared at her.
"What? I'm a prince?"
"Still don't remember that Lydia is a Light Princess, huh?" Tanith asked quietly.
"No. You're kidding, right?" I asked, stunned.
Lydia looked at me. "Nope. After everything you've seen, remembered and heard, that's where you draw the line? Thanks, honey." She looked at me with a disappointed look.
I looked at her, somewhat ashamed and I stared into her eyes. "I'm sorry, sweetheart, please forgive me." I said.
Lydia looked at me, shook her head and walked away. Taryn looked at me.
"Oops. I'll see what I can do." and she rushed off after Lydia.
I watched Lydia storm away with Taryn just behind her. Sam and Tanith shook their heads, watching them as well.
"It'll be ok, Jack. Don't worry. She'll remember how much she loves you soon." Tanith said. "In the meantime, Sam and I have work to do. We'll catch up with you later." She and Sam jogged off, their weapons clinking.
I just stood there for a minute, not sure what to do. Then I started wandering, flipping a knife in my hand. When there was no one else in the hall, I flipped around and flung my knife down the way I came. It stuck into the wall and flashed.
Wait... Flashed? I started walking forward towards my knife, paying attention to every little detail, suddenly alert to everything. I reached it and realized it had stabbed through a little black bug. Pulling the knife out, I left the bug on it and examined it. It was still alive.
I rushed to the common room to find Tanith there, quietly playing guitar. I jogged up to her. "Tanith." She looked up at me with a questioning exlression on her face. Her eyes flashed toward my knife and her eyes widened.
"Jack, where did you find that?" she asked calmly.
"In a hallway. I threw my knife and it happened to stab this. What is it? It's the same shade of black as the Hadrich. I wanted to show it to someone and find out what it is." I answered, looking at the bug.
Taryn ran into the room, followed by Sam. "Jack-" Taryn saw the bug and gasped. "An evecryn! The dark spy. Jack, Lydia is gone. Disappeared, and if you found that, it's likely the Dark Fae took her. We have to find her soon."
I looked at her, worried. Suddenly there came a call from below: "We have an attacker!!"
Taryn drew her bow, Tanith slipped a wickedly curved dagger from her belt, arming her other hand with a short sword. Sam flicked a sword out of its sheathe. "Let's go."
The four of us ran to the window. Taryn and Tanith just leaped out of the fourth-story window. I stopped short, thinking the fall would kill me.
"Jump!" Sam shouted.
"It'll kill me!" I shouted back. Sam ran past me, leapt out the window and called back, "You're a Fae!"
That's right! I drew my revolver and sprinted forward, diving out through the window. During my fall, time slowed. I assessed everything. Tanith was holding her own, surrounded by the enemy, Taryn had landed on the second floor and was raining arrows down on the black horde, and Sam was holding back the black mass at the front door. Other Fae were fighting, clashing with the creatures all over the front courtyard.
In mid-fall, I flipped quickly and started to shoot. Somehow, I couldn't miss. Creatures fell. There was a blast to my side. A black bird flew towards me and attacked me. It slammed into my side, throwing me into the courtyard wall- fifty feet away. I groaned and stood up, slipped my gun into my belt, and drew the sword on my back. Black creatures rushed up.
Again, my instincts took over. I waited, then jumped, sailing over their heads. When I hit the ground, I delivered a heavy backhand slash, cutting down the creatures that I had just jumped over. I did a quick backflip, holding my sword with both hands, pointing straight up. More creatures rushed me. I sighed.
"Enough of this!" I shouted. I spun about, ran up the courtyard wall, jumped off into a backflip, spun my sword around, and when I landed, I slammed the blade into the ground with my momentum, shouting, "Grynor!"
The ground around me ripped up, throwing the creatures up, and when they fell, they were crushed. When I yanked my sword out of the ground, I shouted, "Jrynt!" and a powerful wave of fire blasted out, blowing all of the creatures down to the ground and burning them.
I sprinted to Tanith. Sam joined us quickly. Taryn leapt off the balcony and landed beside us. We stood back to back, swords and knives drawn, prepared for anything. Light Fae all around the courtyard were doing the same. It was deathly quiet. Then a lone enemy walked through the gates.
He was tall, dressed in night black clothes, and his muscles rippled as he walked. His deep brown eyes met mine.
"Jack!" He called. "Still sure you won't join us?"
"Never!" I called back, "You tried to kill Lydia!" Wait... Did he? Where did... AARGH!
