If there wasn't Serena, this would be my ship for Ash.
It's clear in the series that Dawn and Ash share a deep, yet playful friendship. They tease each other a lot while still having sincere conversations when needed.
Truthfully, it makes me sad that Dawn isn't in the anime anymore. She's one of my favorite characters, and aside from romantic interest, she's a good person for Ash to have in his life. They challenge each other to work hard and do their best.
Ash and Dawn share the same values, the most important being respecting all life forms. I really appreciate how they connect over caring for others and their Pokémon.
I don't ship them as a couple as much as I do as best friends. I feel like Dawn would be really good at helping Ash understand social cues, and signals for telling when girls like him.
