" Hey, what are you doing, standing there and all?" Joey's voice made me feel alarmed and happy at the same time. Hormone issues.
" Oh hi Joey," I said, still feeling a little embarrassed. I hope he didn't notice me sticking my face to the wall.
" So..." he hesitated before continuing. " Wanna grab some waffles? I mean if you want to." He scratched the back of his neck.
" Yes please!" I said with a big smile, shoving him out of the main door.
After 5 minutes of silence in Joey's car, He finally said: " so about that day at the alley...'
I mentally cursed Archibald. He should have completed what he started. " Yeah?" I asked innocently.
" The last thing I remembered was you being pulled away by an old man."
" Um... he's my uncle? Yeah, my great-granduncle," I lied.
" Oh. Anyways I tripped and knocked my head on a wall, so I couldn't remember anything. Are you okay?" Joey said, sounding concerned.
" Yeah, he just wanted to show me something," I felt a gut feeling lying to him. He is my only best friend and it's like I broke the trust between us. It was then, I realised a bruise on his forehead hidden under a few strands of hair. I brush the hair aside to take a good look at the bruise. He grabbed my wrist and put my hand back onto my lap.
" Hey, no biggie. I would get hurt a million times for you to be safe," he said with an encouraging smile. I felt my stomach punching itself. The guilt!
" I hear your tummy grumbling there! Lets get some waffles into you!" Joey teased as he locked the car.
" Let's go already then!" I said happily, trying to ignore my stomach churning of guilt. I pushed his back into the diner.
" We'll have the usual," Joey said to the waitress without asking for the menu. We came to this diner often ever since we were ten.
The waitress walked to the kitchen to prepare our ice-cream topped chocolate waffles. I could see her getting quicking glances of Joey through the glass panel. I am pretty sure the waffles are either going to be burnt or have her drool in them. Ugh.
" So... I guess the new kid's your brother's new friend?" Joey asked me while I was staring out the window, seeing the city lighting up across the horizon.
" Huh?" what new kid? I never was really aware of people around me, but he sure was.
" You know that guy doing band stuff with your brother? That... Blaise Shaw?" he sounded more jealous than curious.
" Yeah, I guess. What about him?"
" Just, I got a really bad feeling about him. Maybe you should be more careful around him," his tone is hard to describe now. I'm sure he's overthinking things.
Just then, Blaise walks in the diner. Some instinct makes me duck my head. My eyes follow his movements. He plops himself down at the counter. For some reason, I felt my muscles moving on their own. In a haze, I found myself standing next to him.
" Hello again," Blaise said, seemingly calm to see me suddenly standing next to him. I'm pretty sure I'm going crazy.
