Days later, Amelia had made her decision. She was going to follow in her dads footsteps and continue to serve in the ADF. After a month of sitting around on leave, Amelia returned to work, temporarily training new recruits again, before being sent across to Iraq. Her relationship with Captain Wolfe developed rapidly. He was with Amelia in the airport terminal before she left.
"You stay safe alright?" He said, hugging her tight.
"Yes boss." She giggles back at him before kissing him deeply.
"I'll see you in a couple of months." She says, walking away towards the gate, leaving the Captain standing there, watching her go.She touches down in Iraq, and settles into her new routine. Waiting for her on her bed was a letter, and a pair of rankslides. Promotion to Squadron Leader. Amelia smiles as she unpacks, changing over her rankslides as she goes. This meant she was now a higher rank than her boyfriend at home, Captain Wolfe, as she was the air forces equivalent of a Major.
Amelia was in charge of an entire flight, meaning she was in charge of three sections of soldiers. Amelia was still involved in combat, but she was usually near the rear, and rarely had to engage, instead developing tactics and commanding the sections during battles. Amelia's mental health improved whilst she was in Iraq, one day even having a child run up to her to hug her. The child was stopped and checked before she reached Amelia, but Amelia was still shaken by the memory of children running at her. Amelia however, didn't break down, showing that she was getting stronger.
The months flew past. Amelia returned home after six months away on leave, but had to return to Iraq to complete her deployment. She spent her leave with Captain Wolfe, going on dates and other stuff whilst they had the chance. She also visited her mum, who was working hard in Canberra.
It was two months until Amelia was going home again, and she was on her way to the Q-store when a familiar face came around the corner in front of her. Major Wolfe fell in beside Amelia, walking along with her.
"Hello Squadron Leader, how's my baby girl?" He says the second part softly.
"Well, Major, she's doing well. Congratulations on your promotion by the way." Amelia replies, smirking to herself. They come around another corner and cross an open area where there are some Iraqi soldiers training with the Australian diggers. Amelia and the Major were chatting, catching up on things when a commotion broke out behind them. Both officers turned around to investigate, and found a rogue Iraqi soldier firing on Australian and other Iraqi soldiers. Before either Amelia or Wolfe could react, he took aim and fired at them. He hit both his targets before being taken out himself, a sniper in a watchtower firing repeatedly until the rogue soldier fell. Australian soldiers came from everywhere, running to save the fallen soldiers from the attack."Hello Amelia." Abbey says harshly, waking Amelia from her drug induced sleep. Amelia's body felt like it was on fire with pain.
"Did I not tell you this would happen?" Abbey goes on, visibly getting angry.
"Did I not tell you to fuck off!?" Amelia croaks back as loudly as she can, secretly pressing the distress button beside the call nurse one on her little remote.
"You went against my recommendations Amelia, and you know yourself that you shouldn't be here in Iraq. I told you to resign!" Abbey says, beginning to pace.
"And I told you that this is my life! I know nothing outside the airforce! Now I suggest, CAPTAIN, that you begin following the orders of a SQUADRON LEADER before I have you brought up on insubordination charges. This conversation is over, you are dismissed." Amelia hisses at abbey, just as the nurses enter the room, identifying the problem right away from Amelia's facial expression. Abbey is quickly escorted from the room.
"Nurse, how is Major Wolfe?" Amelia asks after abbey leaves.
"He's recovering now just down the hall. His surgery went well. They managed to remove the bullet from his chest without complication. As for yourself, your arm will fully heal. It was the shock that caused you to black out." The nurse says before walking away. Amelia settles back into her pillow, letting herself fall into sleep once more.
