What's Wrong?

Laila had been sitting on the bench outside, without lunch. Audrey knew her too well. When she didn't get lunch, something was clearly wrong. When Audrey walked outside, walking to the usual bench, she noticed Laila with her head propped on her hand, deep in thought.

"Hey.." Audrey said quietly as she sat down next to her. "What's wrong?"

Laila didn't want to tell Audrey yet. She couldn't, she wouldn't. So instead of spilling the heartbreaking news, she sat up with good posture. She put on a smile, looking back with sad eyes. "Nothing. Just stupid shit." Her smile faltered a little, but she lightened up instead.

"Something is wrong. You didn't get lunch, and you look sad as hell. I can't take it when you're like this. Come on, please." She searched Laila's eyes.

Laila sagged down. "No. Nothing is wrong. Like I said, stupid shit. Just drop it." Her eyes drifted away to the guys bench, looking for Stefan but trying not to make it obvious.

Audrey sighed, trying to keep from annoying her with nagging. She looked down to her lunch tray.

Laila looked at Audrey. "I'm sorry, I need to do something. I think I'm gonna go home early, I.. Uh.." Her voice trailed off, not being able to come up with an excuse. Knowing Audrey, if she used the original "I'm sick" excuse, Audrey would go home with her.

"You just want out of school. Yeah, yeah. I know. Whatever. I'll just hang out with Stefan after school then." Audrey hated when this happened. But she also quite enjoyed it. She was in love with Stefan. They were the best of friends. Stefan was always there for her, and she really did want him. She wanted to call him hers. She wanted to be able to be with Stefan, but most of all.. She just wanted him to like her, or even love her, the way she loved him.
