Mulan’s POV

As we flew to the palace I was still coming to term with what the royal family are. I was scared because I'd heard rumors about them. Especially their son, Morgan. We had stopped a few times to eat and sleep but now we were about a mile from the palace by foot and half that by flight. Are you ready? Marissa asked me.

No I replyed.

Well you don't have time, because we are here. I was shocked because I was so lost in thought that i didn't even notice we were landing on the court yard. On my chest there is a mark that is shaped like armor. The royal gurds came out and Marissa shifted but gave me a look that told me to stay in this form.

"Why are you here?" One asked before looking to me. His eyes became huge. "Follow us," He said as he walked away. Marissa gave me the all clear to shift and I did. We followed them into the grand room where the royals were sitting in their thrones. The king and queen in the middle the prince to the king's left, the princess to the queen's right. I started to freak out when Marissa put her hand on my lower back to encourage me. I smiled at hr and focused on the guards' conversation with the royals.

"I need to see her shift first," The prince said disbelief in his voice. The head guard nodded at me. I shifted and all they could do was stare. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there's not many female guards. Then they spoke.

"How is she so big?" The queen stated. I shifted back. Looking to Marissa for permission to tell my secret. She nodded.

"I have been gifted by the Earth goddess," I told them. They didn't believe me so I read the princess's mind. "Princess you want to me to be your protector," She nodded.

"She's not lieing," The princess told them. Since I was gifted I could access anyone's thoughts rather than a guard, who can read anyone's thoughts but the royals. They have blocks up in their minds.

"Very well. You will be my daughter's protector," The King told me. I nodded in a respectful way. "And the one who brought you is?" This time Marissa spoke.

"My name is Marissa Colt. Daughter of Maxwell Colt, head of security," She spoke and resignation spread over his face.

"I'll let him know you are back," The King told her. She nodded and then lead me out of the room to find her father and family.

15 minutes later and the whole Colt family was gathered in Marissa's room. There was only five of them three brothers, one sister, and her father. They have been talking non stop. Five minutes later a guard came in. "Mulan Colt come with me," I looked to Marissa and she nodded.

"Yes sir," I noded and stood to leave.

"Who are you assigned to," Mr. Colt asked me.

"The princess requested me personally," I replied then left. I was led to the princess's room.

"When will my training start?" I asked not sure.

"Mr.Colt will train you. You are now under his comand," The guard informed me. "For now you need to get to know the princess, so that you can protect her better," I nodded as he opened the door and let me in. The princess was sitting at a desk. "I'll be back in an hour to take you to Mr.Colt," The gaurd then left.

"I have refused a guard for years," She turned and faced me. "Until you came. That's why father let you,"

"Then why did you choose me?" I questioned confused.

"Because you look like someone loyal and you're a girl. Plus I can see the honesty and good in you," I was shocked.

"your skill is reading people?" I asked. She nodded.

"I am and all these people are horrible. Except for the Colts, they are good people. But judging by your reaction you weren't orn into the Colt family," I nodded.

"I was born of a chinese culture and a spanish culture. Neither parents were phoenix. My father and mother were both bird shifters," I explained. She nodded.

"But you are a true phoenix, so what you sid is true," I nodded at her suprised expression.

"You have a great amount of power. How long have you been trained to read people?"

"Since I was able to walk,"

"Wow, I only just fully shifted,"

"You're only eighteen?!" She was shocked. "But your maturity level I supposed you were in your twenties,"

"Yeah my mother was killed by her brother and my father died. Marissa raised me to keep my abbility a secret. We lived by a pack who hated the phoenix race and killed them. The alpha was Marissa's mate and I only found out she was a full phoenix when she protected me from his pack. I took a bullete for her but an hour after I fully shifted. Because of my love for her is so strong my bird's tempurature sky rocketed melting the bullete before it hit me, that night we left," I explained in a short version.

"Wow, how long had you lived with her?"

"About a year,"

"That's amazing" I could relate.

"So why did you pick me? Out of all the guards why the newbie?" She nodded knowing I needed to know this.

"I picked you because I knew you didn't see yourself as being above others and that you have felt the responsibility to protect the people in your life. You are willing to throw yourself into danger's way for those you love and care for. And I could see that we would become great friends," She was right.

"Yeah I'll agree with you on that," Before we knew it the guard was back to take me to Mr.Colt.

2 hours later I had tapped into my inner guardian, or so that's what max said, and had beat his best men. Apparently Marissa had been training me my whole life. When my mother would visit her we would play fight. Turns out it wasn't much play but actually training. Max looked very proud. Though I was barely sweating while him and his men were soaked. "Let's fight in bird form!" He looked to me. "Let's see you fight in your bird form," I nodded and shifted. One after one his men attacked me and only Max himself could match me.

After we had shifted Max walked me to Marissa's room." You're a very good fighter,"

"That's only because I'm newly shifted and I have alot of strength,"

"Your tactics aren't from strength," I was suprised. "My daughter taught you well,"

"I was acting on instinct,"

"She taught you that instinct, otherwise i would have to train you from the begining. I'm happy to see you have exceeded my expectations," He said affection clear in his voice. "I'm proud to call you my granddaughter," I smiled at him and entered Marissa's room.

"you're back," She said hugging me. "How's your day been?"

"It's been great mom," I told her kissing her cheek.

"she's remarkable Marissa," Max told her. "You did good," he said kissing her head in an overly fatherly way.

"So gramps, still think it was a bad idea to bring her?" Marissa asked. I laughed because I knew she was teasing him.

"No I don't. Infact I want her to be in my advanced class of gaurdians," He winked at me and I stiffled a laugh. All was good. For now.
