Marrisa's POV

As I was ready to give up my life for m daughter I had forgotten her love for me. As I heard a shot ring in the air I braced for the pain, only it never came. I looked down in surprise to see Mulan on the floor. She had taken the bullet that was meant for me. I shifted back and cradled her head in my lap. Jakob did this. He killed my daughter. The daughter I had sworn to her mother to protect. I have failed my friend, my daughter, and Fate. Jakob tried to comfort me I looked up at him with hate filled eyes. "You did this!" I yelled my voice faltering. "You killed my daughter," I sobbed barely a whisper. I heard him leave as I wept golden tears for my beloved daughter. When a phoenix cries out of hate they cry black, when out of love its gold, when happy it’s a blue.

"Mom," My daughter whispered.

"What? What is it?"

"I had my fire at full. It melted the bullet before it hit me," She wheezed out.

"Are you ok?" I asked frantically.

"Yeah but it still feels like I was shot," She slowly sat up as I helped her. She held below her left shoulder where she would have been shot.

"It's where you centered your energy on the spot. You still felt the impact, but it didn't touch you," I explained to her. She nodded and stood up.

"By the way, I'm gonna have my final shift in about an hour. So we might want to go to the woods," I nodded. And we left the house and rounded to the woods. After walking for an hour, Mulan's eyes shone through the night. It was time. This process wasn't painful, unlike wolves; it was a calming and healing process. I could see the shift happen, but unlike normal she started to float and shone brighter than my eyes could bear.

After the light died down, perched a bright shinning, beautiful, very large phoenix. She was larger than me. I stood there astounded at the beauty in front of me.

I couldn't believe my eyes. She was a full blooded phoenix. But that's impossible. Her mother and father were only bird shifters not phoenix. Unless, she picked up the gene from one side of the family. This bird was ancient, rarely seen now a day. She had to have picked it up from an ancestor. Or the other way was that she was blessed by the sky Goddess. But that hasn't been done since the 1500's. She shifted back.

"I can read thoughts now. Is that normal?" She asked as I shook my head speechless.

"No, because my dear you have been blessed by the Earth goddess herself," she shook her head.

"That means nothing. I'm just glad you are alive," She said with tears in her eyes. I hugged her.

"We must get you to the palace,"

"Why?" She asked confused by my meaning.

"Because dear you bear the mark of a guard," She looked taken aback by my words.

"A guard?"

"Yes a guard. They only have the phoenix race to protect them because we are hard to kill," I informed her.

"And they only take those with the mark?" She asked. I nodded and went on.

"But be warned they aren't wolves," At this she looked even more confused.

"I thought all of them died years ago,"

"They did along with the only blessed child, but here we are. Go pack your things we are off to the castle!" I sang out overjoyed. We shifted and flew to the house. When we got there Jakob sat on the porch. I mentally told Mulan to stay in he bird form. She agreed and perched on the tree next to our house. "What are you doing here?" I said making myself sadden once more. He looked in Mulan's direction.

"Who is he?" He spat.

"That is a royal guard, here to take me to my family at the palace," I said as I walked in and used a bit of phoenix magic to pack my stuff. He stood there gaping.

"You are leaving me?" He asked in disbelief.

"Yes Jakob, I am leaving. There is nothing keeping me here anymore. You killed it remember?" He winced. I heard Mulan give a squake to tell me to hurry. So I did and left Jakob standing there looking bewildered. Probably wanting to know how I could just walk away from my mate. That is a simple answer. Like birds we get a mate but have the free will to leave them at any time. simple as that. I shifted and together we flew off towards the palace. Leaving Jakob to think my daughter was still dead when in fact she was there the whole time.
