3 finger Salute – Touching three middle fingers of your left hand to your lips and holding it up. The salute is an old and rarely used gesture of District 12′s, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love. Almost everyone in District 12 silently does this gesture to Katniss during the Reaping ceremony for taking Prim’s place as tribute.

A

The Avenues – Streets in the Capital leading to City Circle.

Avox – An Avox is a person who has been punished for rebelling against the Capitol; in other words, a traitor or a runaway. The avoxes service citizens in the Capitol and Katniss during her stay in the Capitol before the games. The avox girl had red hair and eyebrows. They wear red uniforms and stand in the room the tribute’s are in and wait to serve them. Avoxes have had their tongues cut out, rendering them unable to speak.

B

Blood rain- Somewhat like acid rain, but stronger, burning through the characters skin.

C

Cannon- The fire the cannon every time someone dies.

Catacombs – Under the arena are hallways and Launchrooms. It’s very popular for Capital citizens to vacation to the Catacombs after the games.

Catnip - When Gale first met Katniss, she barely whispered her name to Gale and he thought she said Catnip. This became a joke and his private nickname for Katniss.

Career Tributes or Careers – Kids from wealthier Districts that have been fed and trained throughout their lives to be a tribute. Training for the game is illegal, but it happens every year. Usually the Victor emerges from one of these Districts.

City Circle – A large gathering area in the Capital that citizens go to see the tributes be paraded and interviewed.

Cornucopia – A giant golden horn shaped like cone with a curved tail, the mouth of which is at least twenty feet high, spilling over with things that will give tributes a chance at life in the arena. Food, containers of water, weapons, medicine, garmets, fire starters. Stewn around the Cornucopia are other supplies, their value decreasing the farther they are from the horn. A very dangerous part of the arena. Lots of tributes die trying to get the supplies in this area. Katniss and Peeta are instructed to stay away from the Cornucopia by Haymitch.

D

Dark Days – The Dark Days was the uprising of the Districts against the Capital. Twelve Districts defeated, District 13 obliterated.

F

The Fence – A high chain-link fence topped with barbed-wire loops. In theroy, it’s supposed to be electrified twenty-four hours a day as a deterrent to the predators that live in the woods – packs of wild dogs, lone cougars, bears – that used to threaten the streets. But since District 12 is lucky to get two or three hours of electricity in the evenings, it’s usually safe to touch. Even so, Katniss takes a moment to listen carefully for the hum that means the fence is live before going through to the woods.

Forage bag – A bag similar in shape to a over the shoulder messenger bag. Katniss uses a forage bag to carry her animal kills and herbs she gets outside the fence of District 12.

G

Gamemakers – Twenty or so men and women dressed in purple robes evaluate tributes and give a score for each tribute that denotes their chances for winning the games based on a private viewing on the last day of training. Scores are televised and are the basis of betting and sponsors for gifts for the tributes.
