A few days had passed and I realized that were just in the same boat as we were a few months earlier. We were riding along the highway. I turned my head from the road ahead of me and looked off into the woods nearby. I see a few walkers just staggering out in the woods. I looked outwards and thought of my sister, and my family. I wondered where they might be. What they were doing, how they were doing, where they were. And I was hoping that I might find my sister in Oklahoma. Then I remembered Boston. How that place went to hell. And it went quick.
Boston fell on a Tuesday, it was a normal day I was just walking along Main Street and I passed Fenway Park, I walked back to the apartment my family and I were at. Then all of a sudden we hear the roar of tank canon and the crack of rifle fire. So I grabbed my revolver and made sure there were 6 bullets ready to fire if needed. I looked out the window and saw the hell that reigned down on the streets, people getting bitten, people killing other people. It was mass chaos. It was one week we had been stuck up there in that apartment. My father and I had to run outside and my mother had followed him. There were still some people left in the city just how we were, so there were some crowds of people emerging from apartment buildings. Then my parents and I had been separated, I looked back and couldn't see them, I ran looking taking out walkers with my knife, saving bullets, I ran and saw nothing but mutilated bodies everywhere, I saw some people laying on the ground and there was no remnants of what they were, about an hour or so had passed when I ran back to the hotel room because it was getting dark. I locked the door and barricaded it behind me. I fell asleep on the counter, and woke up the next day at 2 in the afternoon. I had no idea how late I stayed up, I know that I woke up with a bottle of Captain Morgan rum next to me and a shot glass in my hand. I woke up with what I would assume to be a hangover. And I took the barricade out from the door, opened it and was met with a walker, I tripped stepping backward and the walker was on top of me, I struggle with it for a minute or so, and throw it off of me, I get up quickly and run grabbing my bag and my dads AR on the way out. I walked down the stairs with my fathers AR out ready to fire, and I don't see anything, I walk out the doors to the apartment building and look to my right, nothing, look to my left, there is a massive crowd standing there seemingly waiting for me. I dart to my right, there was a small crack in the walls of the city, I quickly dart throw the AR over the wall along with the bag before I get there, and slip through quick as possible. Once I get out there I grab my bag and put it on my back, next I pick up the AR and sling it on over my shoulder, and I walk. I reach a few city limit signs and see there is a small town just a few miles down the road. I keep walking, it was about 3 o'clock now, I wouldn't reach the town until about 6 and I was walking through it and saw an RV, I walked up to it and tried to open the door, luckily it was open, and the keys were on the table, so I shut the door and got in the drivers seat, I put the keys in the ignition, and turned them, it took a few tries but I got it to start up, I put the car in reverse and got on the road, and that's when I ran into Cassidy. Then everything from there took its course.
Those weeks just made me feel like complete shit I was alone, I was in constant danger wherever I went. But I somehow pushed past it. And I became the man I am today.
We kept driving, we passed the Memphis, Tennessee sign along the highway. I look at my revolver, I had one bullet left, one. I took the bullet out, and grabbed my knife, I scratched the name Trevor into the side, I was going to save this bullet for the leader of the so called "Rippers". I looked over and saw Alexis and Cassidy liking at me blankly, their eyes moving back and forth between mine and the knife in my hand. I slowly turned the knife around in my hand and put it in its sheath, put the bullet back in the cylinder, and holstered my weapon and continued to look out the window.
James was driving the van, he turned on the radio and put in an old George Strait CD. The first song that popped on was Fool Hearted Memory. The first thing that popped in my head was my little Cousin Lily this was her favorite song by George Strait. She had her mother until she was 6, her mother passed one day, Lily ran up to tell my cousin, her mother, that her grandfather, or my uncle, was leaving, and she couldn't wake her up. Lost her mother when she was 6. I hope she's still alive in today's mess, and if not she's off in a better place.
We make a pit stop to rest for an hour or so. A bus full of people behind us. We stopped on mile marker 70 on the highway, we all decided to rest for a few hours, I was scrounging the area for any necessities, such as ammo, food, water. I found a car with an open door, and a walker pops out. I stole backward and fall, then a bullet flies through its temple, I look over and see James standing there, he tips his hat to me and I do the same. I found nothing too valuable except a box of .45 ammo that I put the 4 that was left into the cylinder of the revolver.
I was on first watch of night hours, everyone fell asleep. I was up for about 3 hours and someone woke up and relieved me. I had a small piece of paper and a pen, I wrote a note of absence.
Hello,
James, Cassidy, Alexis, others. I have to go, I wanted to find some of my family and friends back up in Ohio, please continue on to Oklahoma City, I have found a phone that works in one of the cars, I have left you a phone too. I will turn the phone on everyday at dusk, call me if you need anything. I want to find my little cousin Lily and some of my other family as well. So just call.
QuentinI went out to the car that I had prepared the day before for travel. I opened up the sun visor and the keys dropped, I turned on the car. And there was a knock on the passenger window, I drew my gun as fast as I could. It was Cassidy and Alexis, they both got in.
"What are you doing?" Cassidy asked.
"I'm leaving" I reply.
"Yeah we can see that, but where to?" Alexis said.
"Ohio. I'm going back home for a few days, I'm finding my family. And I kind of want to go alone." I said.
"Well you aren't going without us" Cassidy said.
"Yeah we've been with you the longest Quentin, were going with you end of discussion." Alexis said.
"Fine."I put the keys in the ignition and turn them, and drive off, I drive a few hundred feet down the road and make a U turn and drive back down the highway, back on my way to Ohio. Alexis hands Cassidy a CD to listen to and she puts it in. Side of A Bullet by Nickelback starts playing. And we continuously drive in silence. We were going back home for a few days.
