Right as we were leaving, Anastasia announced she had to go to the bathroom. I was hesitant to let her go, due to the fact I didn't want to be alone with her family.
I couldn't make her piss herself though, so I scooted over so she could get out of the booth.
We all sat there in silence, but only for a blissful moment, when a familiar husky voice greeted us. I felt someone slap their hand down on my shoulder, hard, and I winced.
"Aw, come on, Emmett, toughen up, pal. It was just a love pat," Calvin stuck his hand out across the table and shook James's hand, and waved at Beth. He smiled and nodded at Percy, who just smiled back.
"What are y'all doing here?" Calvin asked.
Obviously eating? what else do people do at a restaurant?
"Just getting ourselves some grub with Emmett and Stasia!" James answered.
"Oh that's nice, a little quality family time with the in-laws," Calvin said jokingly. I looked up at him and he was still smiling. He has stunningly green eyes, but other than that he was quite average.
"Soon to be grandparents, might I add!" Beth chimed in. I felt Calvin's grip on my shoulder weaken and he gasped.
"No," He said, astonished. I smiled to myself. Calvin always had a thing for Ana. Well ha-ha to you buddy, she's carrying my baby!
"Yep! gonna have a little child!" I admitted. I looked over and saw Ana standing at the bathroom, facing us. She motioned for me to come over there.
"Uh," I muttered, "just a moment," and I walked over to Ana. She pulled me into the girls room, but luckily, it was a one-person bathroom.
"Why is he here?" she whispered. She was frantic-- her eyes were wild and her hair was a bit tangled, I assume from pulling at it.
"He just showed up, I don't know," I admitted. Why was this a problem? she has seen Calvin hundreds of times before!
"Is everything okay?" I asked. Immediately, Ana went from frantic to calm.
"Yeah. Let's go." She shook out her nerves and led me to the table. She held me at arms length.
"Well hello, mommy-to-be," Calvin greeted Ana. She nodded, but didn't look at him. She was being suddenly very awkward.
"Well, we should probably be leaving now," I spoke up. I reached across the table to shake James's hand, but he ignored my gesture and scooted out of the booth. He waved goodbye at Ana, and didn't say anything else.
I saw that hurt her. I walked her to the car, and decided to leave her dad with the bill this time.
"Hey," I uttered as we were driving. "Let's go do something," I offered. Ana just shook her head, and I saw tears stream down her face. I reached over and grabbed her hand, and put it up to my lips. We held still there for a moment, but Ana pulled away. She placed my hand in her lap, and we sat there, quietly.
The night before I had to break the news to my mom, privately.
"Is the damn thing yours?" She asked, taking a drag from her cigarette. She was about to go on a date tonight, she said it wasn't anything serious though. Some loser with money and a receding hairline, who lost his wife a few years back. My mom was a sucker for a sob story... And a lot of cash.
"Well who else would it belong to? She wouldn't ever cheat on me," I said. My mom raised her eyebrows. There was a honk outside, and my mom put out her cigarette.
"Would she?" My mom said, walking out the door.
She wouldn't... Would she?
"So Ana," I said. I was breaking the silence, again. "I told my mom last night,"
Ana raised her eyebrows. She didn't know much about my mom... I didn't talk much about her. Ana had only met her once. "How is she taking it?"
"Quite nicely." I replied. I paused a moment, and turned to look at Ana, for just a second. She was looking over at me, her face streamed with tears and her hair matted down to her head.
"Why did you look at me just then?" Ana asked.
"You were staring at me," I said, laughing.
"You looked over, though. You never look over. What's going on?"
I sighed, and pulled into Ana's apartment parking lot. "My mom said this dumb thing," I admitted. Ana squeezed my hand in her lap, and I killed the engine.
"What was it, Em?" She asked, concerned. I reached over and tucked her hair behind her ear. I wiped the streaks of mascara off of her cheeks, and smiled at her. She smiled back. I kissed her hand again, and then pulled her into me, as much as I could. We were awkwardly hugging in the car, yet it felt so right. So normal.
"My mom was stupid and said," I was whispering, "said the baby wasn't mine,"
Ana pulled away, and raised her eyebrows. "Why did she say that?"
"Why are you getting so defensive?" I asked. This wasn't her usual behavior.
"Because I'm being accused of cheating!" She shouted. The people outside looked over at the car.
"Just tell me it is, so I can have proof," I pleaded. She rolled her eyes, and got out of the car. She slammed it shut, and stomped up her stairs to her apartment.
I guess that was that... Is the baby mine?
