The sun was sinking into the horizon, giving the sky and water a recolour of tropical orange.
Laying on his back on top of a massive, tall, smooth rock was Kye.
His usually pale skin was tinted orange due to the sunset, making his ocean blue eyes absorb the beautiful, Californian sunset.
His wavy, light brown hair hung off of his upside down head like a mop. His long, black eyelashes somehow seemed more emphasised in this hour.
Kye looked hard and carefully into the calm ocean; waves rolling into the shore, washing up crabs and pulling them back.
Kye's thick eyebrows raised as he saw a unusually long, human-sized fishtail come out of the water, splash and then submerge back into the reef.
He perked up, then cupped his hands and placed them around his mouth like a megaphone;
"Lanoula! I saw a mermaid!"
In response to his statement, he had a sea sponge thrown at his head, then a laugh.
"Yeah, and I found the city of Atlantis."
Kye looked over at his older sister, furrowing his eyebrows. "I know what I saw, Lanoula."
"I think I figured out where El Dorado is, too." Lanoula's glossy lips curled on one side. Her dimples added to her natural beauty.
"You gotta believe me," Kye jumped down from the rock and landed beside Lanoula. "I know they exist!"
"Bring home a mermaid and marry her, then I'll believe you." Lanoula slipped her fingers into her denim ripped shorts.
Lanoula has a slight chubby stomach, that slightly hung over her belt. She didn't want to get rid of it, because she thought it was beautiful. She wasn't wrong; it was very beautiful.
Lanoula was a bit taller than Kye, along with 2 years age difference. Her long, frizzy hair reached down to her waist, which she usually had tied back with a scrunchy.
Her usual outfit choice was cropped shirts and ripped shorts, along with flip flops in the colour that matched her outfit.Kye crossed his arms, "Mermaids can be men, too."
"Hmm..." Lanoula placed her fingers on her chin in thought.
"What?" Kye raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, nothing." Lanoula chuckled.
After a few minutes of silence, Lanpula looked over at Kye,
"Didn't you used to throw bottles with letters inside them into the sea?"
Kye laughed, "Yeah, used to. I don't want to know if anyone found them, they're so bad."
Lanoula chuckled, "Yeah, they are."
That night, the two siblings and their big father, Apisaloma, were sitting at a round, wooden table, eating salmon.
"So, Kye," Apisaloma smirked, "did you find any mermaids today?"
"Oh, come of it, dad!" Lanoula sighed, "you're only encouraging him!"
"I did see a mermaid! It's tail came out of the water!" Kye stated.
Lanoula chuckled, "Are you sure it wasn't a beluga wale?"
"No, I'm serious!" Kye slammed his hands on the table.
Apisaloma ran his large hand through his frizzy black hair, "I believe you, son."
Later that night, Kye was in bed. He got up to get a glass of milk, but stopped to listen to a conversation that Apisaloma and Lanoula were having.
