Chapter Three: Quotes and Metaphors
The wind stopped, the sounds of birds chirping stopped, and people around me stopped, too. It's like the world around me seemed to just freeze, the world felt motionless.
My whole body stiffened. My heart felt like it totally stopped beating, blood had been drained from my face, and I started shivering. Not because I was cold, because I was terrified.
I was terrified that everyone at school would find out and they would start talking about me, whether it's behind my back or right in front of me. I'll be the main topic everyone would talk about every day. They probably will make rumors regarding me, even worse than the actual truth. I would be known as the freak with the dead parents. It would haunt me for the rest of my life.
A bit of the story got into the hands of the media, but thank god the news didn't spread internationally. Nana threatened the media that she would sue them if they published anything related to the family, including me. So, they kept our family name anonymous.
I didn't think anyone would look for the cold case of the killed parents, and relate it to me.
"H-how. . .d-did. . ." I stuttered in shock and fear. How is it even possible? No, he must've thought of something else. Surely, he didn't figure out what happened to my parents. But the grim expression on his face told me otherwise.
What's going to happen, now? Will he tell the whole school about me? People would start saying 'Hey, is that the girl whose parents got killed for who knows what reason, and people thought she died or something?' I mentally shuddered at that. I don't want to even think about it, but I have to expect the worst now, right?
"Well, " He started uneasily. "Last year, on the same day, you seemed a little off, and I thought that something's going on. So, I wanted to find out, I was worried about you, and I hated seeing you so . . .distant." He murmured the last part, but I heard what he said.
"I went to Natalie, your best friend, and asked her about you. She wouldn't exactly tell me, but I could see the fear in her eyes, and it made me nervous. She did tell me something, though. She told me you lived with your grandma."
He stopped talking and stared intently at me. The information slowly began to sink in, and when he noticed I wasn't going to speak, he continued talking.
"It was normal for you to live with your grandma, I thought it was okay, at first. But then, it hit me. Where are her parents? I asked Natalie again, but she fell silent. I knew she wasn't going to tell me, so I had to find out myself."
That's why I trust Natalie, she would never betray or backstab me. But I am mad at her for giving him a bit of information about me. It wasn't any of his business, after all. So why meddle into my life?
"I actually wanted to talk to you about it, but I'd never find you. You would always disappear out of sight."
He wanted to talk to me? I never knew that he knows I still exist. He has a point, though. I always slither my way into hiding, so no one can find me. As if they will, I don't think anyone knows I'm still alive.
"I thought about where you lived before coming to Binghamton. I asked Ryan, and he told me that Natalie and you were friends for eight years, and she said you used to live in Colorado."
My heartbeat was getting faster, and I began to feel really nervous. My hands were shaking uncontrollably, I tried to stop them, but no avail.
"I looked up your name online. It took me days, and I would spend hours to look for something, anything. I know it sounds weird and creepy, but I needed to find something." He admitted sheepishly. Was he that determined to know about me?
