When he woke up, Hannibal realised that there was no place to go if he needed to… go. He decided to ask River the next chance he got. Luckily, it was quite soon, as River brought up his once daily meal.

“River,” said Hannibal. “Could you kindly let me out to use your lavatory?” River looked at him, confused. Hannibal sighed. It was such a struggle to communicate with one so incompetent. “Can you let me out to use the bathroom please?”

River shook her head. “Sorry, Hannibal, but I can’t risk you escaping and harming anyone, especially me.”

“Then please tell me what I am supposed to do in that situation?” Hannibal asked, starting to get annoyed. River pointed to a bucket that had not been there earlier. “Use that,” she said, and walked off.

Hannibal was infuriated. Not only was he trapped like an animal, but was also expected to act like one too? That was just extremely RUDE. Hannibal was thinking of all the ways he would kill this girl when he noticed something glinting in the corner of his eye. He turned and saw, just inches away from the cage, a silver nail file. Hope suddenly filed Hannibal. “This might just help me break out of this cage,” he thought.

Using the sandwich to drag it over to the cage, he began working on one of the more rusted bars. It would take a while, but he knew his escape was inevitable.

The nail file scraped against the rust, sending flakes flying.  After a few, long hours, Hannibal could feel the bar loosening. He stopped, and shook the bar. It wobbled violently, threating to come off completely. He smiled. This would do, for he didn’t want to make it too obvious what he was doing. “Even a fool like her would notice a large, steel bar missing from a cage like this,” he thought.

He decided to break from filing the bars. It was tiring, and the faint light that was coming through the skylight was dimming, though he still couldn’t tell whether it was morning or nightfall. Tired, but hopeful, Hannibal fell asleep on the thin blanket once more.
