The world around Hannibal turned white, and light burst from the walls. It blinded him, and he closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, he was in a hospital ward, sitting at the side of River’s bed. Her mother, and the man who walked through him who Hannibal now knew was her father, also sat by the bed. They didn’t look up as Hannibal materialized beside them.  He could hear the heart monitor go flat, as River’s life slipped away.

“What was wrong with her?” he asked them. River’s mother turned around to face him. “She was suffering from a brain tumour, which caused her to go into a coma. She’d been like this for over a year now. In a way, it’s nice to see her out of her suffering, but it’s a tragedy also.”

Here, the mother began to cry, and turned back around to see her daughter. The parents seemed to forget that Hannibal was even there, so he turned to leave.

A great gust of wind blew through the ward, and brought Hannibal back.

He was back on the plane that was crashing.

He braced himself.
