Chapter one- A new Pippi Virgin

I knock lightly on the hospital doorframe  as the morning light hits Rory's face.  She smiles. "Hey stranger." She says drowsily. "Do you want more rest?" I ask. "Nah. I'm ironically tired of resting." She laughs. I smile. I look at the small baby in her arms. "She's beautiful." I say. "She is." Rory says with a smile. "Like you." I add. Rory smiles as I put a hand on her shoulder. "There's just one problem." Rory says. "What's that?" I ask. "She's a Pippi Virgin!" Rory jokes. I cock my eyebrow upward. "A what?" I ask. "A person who's never seen Pippi Longstocking! Keep up with the lingo!" Rory laughs. "Ohhh. I thought that was a alcoholic beverage or something." I laugh. She giggles. "Can you put her in the bassinet?" She asks. "Of course. " I say lifting the small little girl. She was beautiful up close. I mean, she was when I was standing next to Rory. But.. somehow closer was different. Suddenly the fear. The anxiety of being with someone who's kid wasn't mine, didn't bother me. It didn't bother me at all. Because at this moment I held one of the most precious things in the world.

It seems dramatic, but the world seemed to freeze. The possibility of me proposing and her saying yes, meant I would fill the role as her father. And that didn't bother me.

It felt like fate was laying down a timeline in my mind as I walked to the bassinet.

I started as bitter kid who resorted to smoking.

I met Luke.

I met Rory.

I fell for Rory

I fell in love with Rory.

I met my father

I left Rory.

I met new people.

I came back.

I thought I lost everything to words in a dorm room

I came back to discover I hadn't.

I made my life better because of Rory's encouragement.

I encouraged Rory to write a book.

She agreed.

And she included me in her story again.

Even though I had ruined things over and over again she still forgave.

"Jess?" Rory's voice interrupts my thoughts. "Yeah?" I ask. "You okay? I mean, you've stood over the bassinet for five minutes." Rory says. "Yeah... Yeah Rory I'm perfect actually." I tell her.

I put my hand in my pocket and grip the small black box.

"...Rory?" I call.

"Yeah?"

"...Will... Will you marry me?"

She looks at me with wide eyes.

"What?"
