Marinette gazed out the plane window despairingly, wishing Adrien had been able to come along with her and her friends. She, Alya, Nino, Juleka, Rose, and Luka had been planning this American road trip for a while. Adrien was going to come at first, but his father had forbidden him from going.  He had apologetically declined and unintentionally left Marinette feeling down.

She had been in this mood for a while now. Adrien had declined the trip a month ago, but that was not enough time for Marinette to recover. Love does crazy things to the heart- namely, having the same person on your mind for way longer than they should be.

Alya noticed the downcast look on her best friend's face. "Don't be too upset, M. You've known he wasn't going to come for awhile."

"Yeah." Marinette sighed. "It's just I still wish he could've come. It would have been more fun."

"You mean you might have had your chance to really get closer," Alya corrected. "Girl, you honestly really need to let it go. You're going to ruin the whole trip for yourself if you don't just move on this one time."

"I know, I know. I'm trying to forget. Maybe the fun will distract me when we get there."

"That's the spirit!" Alya cheered. She went back to her laptop, typing up a blog.

Still a bit wishful, Marinette pulled out her phone. She opened the messaging app and clicked Adrien's contract. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard as she thought of what to say. She decided on a simple, "Wish you were here :)" and then decided to watch movies for the rest of the trip.

Ten minutes into Thor: Raganarok, Adrien replied with: "Me too <3." Even though that heart was purely platonic, Marinette smiled at his text anyway.

The group finally landed at their destination- Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States of America. They gathered their belongings from baggage claim. After renting a big van that seated up to seven, they loaded up their luggage. Luka, being the oldest, was decided to be the driver, so he hopped into the driver's seat. Juleka and Rose climbed in the back, Nino and Alya got in the middle, so Marinette took the passenger seat.

Off they went on their grand trip. They were planning to visit Richmond, New York City, Atlanta, Nashville, Dallas, Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. They were prepared to make occasional spontaneous stops, such as maybe deciding last-minute to visit Old Faithful or Mount Rushmore. Really, they just wanted to see mostly everything America had to offer; the waterfalls, rolling hills, green plains- all of it was on their list.

They would only be staying in each city for a day or two tops. They wanted to see as much as possible in the three weeks they had.

Bored, Marinette stared at the passing Washington Monument in the distance. Movies got tiresome after the long flight, although staring at her phone screen was what really wore her out. Luka glanced at her with a hint of worry in his eyes. "You good, Marinette?"

Marinette snapped out of her daze. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine."

"Want a little music?" Luka offered.

"Sure."

Luka turned on the radio and flipped through the stations until he settles on one playing "Believer" by Imagine Dragons. He kept the volume fairly low for the others, but loud enough for Marinette to be distracted from her thoughts of Adrien.

"I was choking in the crowd,
Building my rain up in the cloud,
Falling like ashes to the ground,
Hoping my feelings, they would drown."

That last line spoke to Marinette. She sighed deeply. Soon, she nodded off, the lines about "pain" echoing in her mind as she dozed off.
