one: the small missing piece

"Go, Kian! GO!" Niall yells from the sidelines, practically running along side of his son as he heads towards the other end where the goal was at. Sawyer and Grayson were right behind their father, cheering on their brother like they always did because they weren't quite old enough to play on the team. Harry watches from his spot on the bleachers, a soft smile on his face as he watches. Niall was always the most vocal parent at the games, earning glares from the other parents but Niall didn't seem to mind. He loved cheering Kian on, he loved seeing that bright smile on his face as he played the game. Niall was only excited because Kian was excited, he also wanted to make sure his eldest son knew that Niall was always going to be there to cheer him on.

Niall had grown up without a father, without someone to cheer him on. He'd made a promise that none of his children would know what that felt like. That's why Harry never said anything, that's why he gladly let Niall take control. Besides, Harry loved seeing Niall interact with their sons. The man who had once been terrified of having even one child had actually been the one to suggest they should try for another, hence the twins. Harry figured they'd stop at three, but Niall had been hinting at wanting another one. They still felt like someone was missing in their family, the sixth chair at their dinning table always remaining empty. Niall made comments about it, teasingly at first but the more it happened the less Harry believed that Niall was just cracking jokes.

It wasn't like Harry hadn't thought about it...

Harry wouldn't mind to try for one more, maybe they'd finally get that girl. Harry remembered being convinced one of the twins was a girl, silently hoping that was the case. He was happy for both of the boys though, both of them looking the complete opposite of Kian. Kian took after Harry, the same dimpled smile and nose but he had Niall's blue eyes. Grayson was the spitting image of Niall, blue eyes and all. Sawyer was the only one who seemed to inherit Harry's green.

"That's my boy!" Niall yells out again, bringing Harry to the game at hand. Kian was running with his fists in the air, imitating a screech that quite resembled Niall's. It was just a kiddie soccer team, no one kept score, but that didn't stop Niall from celebrating the obvious win. Harry's boys all ran to hug Kian, Niall throwing Kian up on his shoulders as Sawyer and Grayson let out victory yells. The twins are running around Niall, waving the makeshift flags Niall had helped them make last night.

Harry smiles softly at the scene, loving his family for everything that they were. It warmed Harry's heart that Kian would always have someone there to cheer him on, feeling proud of the fact they'd raised such supportive kids. Harry finds himself wanting another though, one who would sit back and watch the games with him. He wanted that little girl, the one that Niall and Harry should've had first. It had been a long time since they'd lost Nevaeh, Harry's mind often wandering to her around this time of year. It was almost May, the inevitable anniversary of the baby that never came coming up faster than Harry wanted it to. They had healed immensely over the years, Harry's heart full with the love of all three of his boys...

But there was still a piece missing, there would probably always be a piece missing. It wouldn't matter if they had another one, it wouldn't matter if they had a girl... That piece would be gone because Nevaeh was gone. Harry knew that... but he still wanted to try. He knew he'd be able to get Niall on board, maybe Anne could take the boys for the weekend and Harry could mention it... Harry really wanted another one. He really wanted that little girl.

"Mummy, did you see? I did it!" Kian is in front of Harry now, pulling at his shirt as he points excitedly towards the goal. Harry smiles softly down at his son, wrapping an arm around him as he pulls him in for a hug.

"You did amazing, Key. I am so proud of you." Harry says, kissing the top of his son's head despite the fact he was all sweaty. It didn't matter to Harry, he'd changed this kid's dirty diapers for three years. Sweat was nothing compared to the horrors he'd faced there...

"Daddy says we can go get ice cream before visiting Grammy. Is that okay?" Kian asks, still looking ever so excited. It was something Harry adored about all of his children, they were always happy. As if to prove a point, Sawyer's giggles sounded from the now empty field, drawing Harry's attention to his youngest son. Niall was standing in front of goal, pretending to block at his three year old gets ready to kick the ball.

"That's perfectly fine, Key." Harry says, walking with his eldest to the field. Grayson was taking his turn now, Sawyer trying to distract Niall by climbing on his back. Niall's laughter sounds like music as they approach, Grayson kicking the ball into the goal before he too charges at his father. The twins wrestle Niall to the ground, the three of them laughing and Harry feels his heart soar.

Harry wanted just one more smile to add to the family.
