twelve: happy birthday, vaeh

"Daddy, what are we doing?" Kian asks, looking at his father curiously as they all gather in the backyard. Harry was lagging a bit behind, hanging back in the kitchen as he tries to calm himself down enough to join the rest of his family. Niall lets out a sigh as they sit out on the back porch, running a hand through his hair as he glances nervously back into the house. He couldn't help but feel worried for his husband who had seemed to be a bit more on edge than normal, but not wanting to alert his eldest of such fears Niall just smiles at him.

"At the moment we're waiting for Mummy to join us, once he gets here we'll explain a little better," Niall says softly, ruffling Kian's hair which respectfully earns a squawk of alarm from the young boy. He quickly works to flatten his hair, giving his father one of his best glares that only reminded Niall fondly of Harry. "Why don't you go keep your brothers entertained? I'll go see what's taking him so long."

"I think they're entertained enough, Daddy." Kian points out, Niall's eyes landing on the twins who had taken it upon themselves to play in the mud left behind from the nights previous storm. Niall lets out a sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose as he's hit with the prospect of bath time. Thankfully Harry finally made it outside before Niall could get too worked up about it. Niall looks up at his husband anxiously, wanting to ask if he was alright but he had a feeling he already knew the answer to the question. The loss of Neveah had always hit Harry the hardest, both of them knew it and both of them understood it.

"Ready?" Niall asks, Harry only managing a nod. Niall stands up from his spot on the porch, calling the twins to attention and grimacing when Sawyer wiped his hands onto Niall's pants once he'd run up to them. Together, the family of five moved to the picnic table they kept on their back porch, Niall allowing the messy toddlers to sit on his lap while Kian kept to Harry's side, sensing his mother's obvious distress. On the table sat the few things they had kept in remembrance of their first born, Nevaeh's first sonogram, the first toy Harry had bought for, along with the blanket Anne had made with her name stitched in the right bottom corner, and last but not least a paper lantern. Kian reached out a curious hand, his fingers brushing across the soft material of the blanket with brows furrowed.

"That's like my blanket! But who's Ne... Neva... Mummy, what does it say?" Kian asks, obviously giving up on trying to pronounce his sister's name. Harry takes in a shaky breath, his own fingers reaching for the blanket as fresh tears started to pool in his eyes.

"Nevaeh and she... she's your sister, Key." Harry whispers, Kian's curious look growing.

"But I don't have a sister?" The words were innocent enough, Kian not understanding what was going on in the slightest. Harry takes in a deep breath, the tears falling freely down his cheeks now before he continues his explanation.

"You do have a sister, but like Grandpa Robin, she's up in heaven. Today is her birthday." Harry says quietly, still unable to talk louder in fear of completely losing himself. He wipes the tears away, smiling sadly at his eldest who's mouth was in an o shape.Harry meets Niall's gaze, a flush coming across his cheeks as he sees the proud look on his husband's features. Harry wouldn't admit it out loud but he felt like a weight had been lifted off his chest all of a sudden, the pain left behind from all those years ago still there but it wasn't quite so loud. He was grateful that Kian didn't ask any more questions, Harry knowing for a fact he wouldn't be able to answer them without losing himself.

"Your mummy and I have a tradition of sorts for her birthday where we... where we light a lantern for her and this year we decided that we'd like you and your brothers to join us." Niall chimes in, Kian looking up from the blanket and at his father now who offers him a soft smile. Harry is already reaching for the paper lantern as Niall speaks, Kian's blue eyes filled with a curious delight at the sight of it. Sawyer tries to reach across the table for the lantern, letting out a screech of protest when it was just out of reach. He turns to look at Niall in disbelief, mud covered hand patting Niall's cheek and leaving a smear.

"Daddy, that's mine!" Sawyer states, Niall chuckling a little.

"No, that's your sister's and Mummy is going to help you guys all light it, okay? So just sit still little man." Niall says, Harry reaching for a lighter as Niall stands back up. Together the family of five moves to the edge of the porch, Niall helping the boys hold the paper lantern as Harry gets ready to light it. Once the lantern was lit, Niall lifted Kian and the lantern up, allowing his eldest son to help him cast it off. The twins watch in amazement, standing next to Harry as he once again wipes at his eyes. Harry looks over at his husband, the two of them sharing a look that spoke volumes between them.

"Happy birthday, Vaeh..." Kian whispers, blue eyes watching as the lantern drifts further and further away.

oh man.

it's been like.... six months? maybe longer?

to start off, i'm going to apologize. as you all are aware, i stopped writing 1D fanfics around June last year but i wanted to keep writing this story. i got caught up in writing my Steve Rogers fic and started to neglect this story to the point where i got massive writers block whenever i tried to write it because i couldn't figure out what to write like at all so this book got pushed to the back burner with me saying "oh, i'll update it next week!" and then i didn't and this went on for a long time. i have every intention of finishing this book, i loved writing the first one and i have so many things i want to do with this little narry family i've created and i want niall and harry to get their perfect ending in this series. i honestly cannot guarantee that i'll get back to regular updates, my inspiration for this book comes and goes and i'll get halfway through a chapter only to hate what i wrote so i have to start over and yeahhhhhhhh

so to sum it up, i'm going to write this story but there won't be frequent updates like before unless i get massive inspiration to where i can't stop writing.

anyways, thank you to everyone who is still reading this story. i really appreciate your patience and i hope you'll continue to read this even though i suck at updating now!

lots of love,

connie xx
