"Still not sleeping?" Louis asks a few days later, noticing the dark bags underneath his friend's eyes. Niall just grunts in response, not even bothering to look up from his coffee. Louis lets out a soft laugh at the response, sitting down in his chair across from Niall.
"It's nothing." Niall says when Louis keeps staring at him expectantly which only earns a soft laugh from the older.
"You look like someone ran you over with their car and then backed up to make sure they really got you. You and H having problems again?" Louis asks and Niall is quick to shake his head.
"No, everything is perfect, has been for a long time... I just haven't been getting much sleep is all." Niall says, purposefully leaving out the reason why he wasn't sleeping much. Nightmares were keeping Niall up, every time he closed his eyes he had the same dream and he didn't quite understand why. His father couldn't touch his family, no matter how many time he sent threats or made Niall feel like he could... He was just being paranoid, or at least that's what he wanted to believe.
"Is it because it's May? I know this time of year is always hard on you guys, Harry especially." Louis says, looking at Niall sympathetically when his friend's shoulders go rigid. The small hole in Niall's heart aches just slightly at the mention of the dreaded anniversary that was coming up. Louis was right, May was always a hard month on their little family. Harry got more distant, not on purpose and Niall tended to drown himself in work the best he could without neglecting the boys. They still lit a lantern for their lost angel, long after the boys were fast asleep so there wouldn't be questions. It wasn't that they wanted to forget about Nevaeh or that they wanted to keep her away from her brothers, Niall and Harry just didn't know how to explain it in a way that they would understand. Kian was an inquisitive little boy and more than likely he'd so many questions that it would overwhelm Harry who always got hit by Nevaeh's birthday harder than Niall did. Niall still grieved in his own way, but he hadn't been the one to carry the baby or the one who had to "give" birth to her.
"It gets a little easier every year, almost makes me feel guilty." Niall says quietly, stirring his coffee now and avoiding Louis' gaze. Louis would probably never understand, not that Niall really expected him to. Louis didn't have children, probably never would based on his own personal choice. Sometimes Niall felt like Louis thought about it, whenever he'd come over to play with the boys he could see that somewhat longing look in his eyes that Harry had when they had first started trying after Nevaeh... It was the look of a man who wanted something he felt like he could never have.
"You don't have to feel guilty for moving on, Niall. It's been what? Seven years? It's only natural that you'd move on by now... Time heals all wounds or so I've been told." Louis says and Niall just shrugs. He doesn't really know what else to say, feeling somewhat thankful when his phone alerts him of an incoming text message. He smiles a little when he sees it's from Harry, his mood instantly lifting.

course, do you need me to get something for dinner tonight?
"I'm going to be leaving early today, Lou." Niall says as he waits for Harry's reply, earning a look from his friend who clearly didn't think that was very fair. Louis and Niall were the bosses though, they owned the radio station they worked for and had for nearly five years now. Niall loved it, able to make his own hours and make sure he had enough time for his family. Louis on the other hand usually ended up being the one who ran the show because of that, not that the older ever voiced his protests.
"The only way that's acceptable is if you bring the boys here to see their uncle Lou for a few minutes, I miss the little bastards." Louis says, giving his best pout which only makes Niall laugh. He doesn't scold Louis for the swearing, knowing full well that if the boys ever learned any swear words it would be from Niall himself and not Louis. Harry was getting ready to invest in a swear jar, especially now that Kian was starting to mimic Niall.
"I'll see what I can do."

No, I should be home in time to make dinner. Tell Louis that I'll bring him a cake or something to make up for you leaving him alone in the studio again. Love you xx

love you more xx
"Have I ever voiced the fact that you both are disgustingly cute?" Louis asks, earning another laugh from Niall who shrugs yet again. He didn't care if they were disgustingly cute because he loved Harry more than anything. Nothing mattered to Niall more than his family and he knew he would do absolutely anything to keep them safe.
