My contest entry for Love, Simon. 500 word letter to society. Hopefully my story will teach you that anything is possible in the darkest of times, even hope.

June 12 marks a terrible day in history. 49 people were shot and killed at a gay bar in Orlando Florida.
I'm so very sorry for the family and friend of the victims, but also the victims themselves.
Pulse was made so people of the LGBTQ+ community could have a home. A place where we were with people just like us and be ourselves. It is so unfortunate that someone did this.
I am always the person saying that you are entitled to your own opinion. But shooting in a bar, targeting a certain group of people, is not okay. Violence is never the answer to anything.
Two years ago when this happened, I did not know anything about myself. I thought I was as straight as a wooden ruler. My parents did not tell me about this event and I didn't watch the news.
The first time I heard of this was from a Youtuber names Miles Mckenna. He had a TV Show called Hella Gay. He interviewed the owner of Pulse around 10 months after the tragedy.
When I heard this, I was upset. Even though I wasn't part of the community, I felt pity. I looked more into it and I was very displeased. I cried over the victims in my room at 3am.
My parents are very republican, and they talk badly about the LGBTQ+ community everyday. They didn't agree with this either, which is very strange.
I just want to say that this day is a remembrance day. Not a good one, of course. This day is one of many tragedies that has happened in this country.
This may not seem like much... but i'm putting down 49 flowers. One for each of the victims who died in this terrible tragedy.
