Introducing Taylor

Sunday went by fast.

Mom and I went to church that morning with her parents, then afterwards we went shopping.  I got some new clothes for the summer while mom got new dresses for her job.  She had been promoted to some kind of really important lawyer, but I know nothing about it because I really just don't care.

I spent the rest of the day laying around the house doing nothing.

Monday morning I went to the gym with Taylor.

"So, anything interesting happen to you this weekend?" Taylor asked as I hopped into her red convertible. It's almost like she knew something had happened.

"Yeah, kind of. What about you?" I tried to switch the topic to her.  It's usually pretty easy.

"Eh.  Parents got into this huge fight.  Same as about every weekend.  But you said kind of, so that obviously means something major happened.  Tell me everything now."

Damn it.

"Well..." I sigh. "Okay.  My mom's getting married."

Silence.

Then an ear piercing scream.

"Oh my goodness! That's great news! Aw are you going to be a bridesmaid?  That'd be so cool.  I bet the guys great.  I bet he's good looking too.  Wait, it is a guy right?  Because if not then I'm sure she looks great but-"

"Um no. It's a guy. Calm down."

"Oh okay that's cool.  So why don't you sound excited?" Taylor looked at me curiously.  She knows I've wanted my mom to settle down with someone.

"I am excited for her!  But, the guys got son's.  Four, actually." I sigh.  I sigh a lot these days.

"Oh.  Well, you'll have siblings then.  I bet that'll feel weird for you." Taylor laughs.  Then her face goes really serious. "Wait.  Are they hot?"

"Oh my God! Is that seriously all you can think about?"

Taylor giggles. "Yeah, I guess.  So who are they?"

I'd be lying if I said no.

"Yeah.  Their pretty hot."

"Oh my gosh!  Do they go to our school?" Taylor bounced around in her seat.  I feel like she's going to like this marriage more than any of us.

"Yeah.  They do."

"Who?  Come on Alex I have to know!"

I really didn't want to tell her.

"The Smith brothers."

I guess it doesn't matter anymore if I didn't want to tell her.

Taylor slammed on the brakes.

"WHAT?!?"

Cars behind us started honking their horns.  We were stopped in the middle of a busy road.  It's a miracle nobody hit us.

"Would you just drive?"

Taylor hit the gas peddle, mumbling under her breath about asking me a question.

"Okay.  Yes, the Smith brothers are going to be my stepbrothers.  I'm not happy about that."  I leaned my head back on the seat.  This drive to Fitness 100 was taking forever to end.

"Well I wouldn't be happy either if I were you.  Those butt faces.  How are you going to survive?"

"I honestly don't know."

We were quiet the rest of the way to the gym.  Thankfully we were only five minutes away at that point.

We worked out in silence too.  Only listening to the faint Lady Gaga music playing somewhere in the background.  Three miles, fifty pushups, and way to many random machine stuff later, we left to get something to eat.

"I really just can't believe they are going to be you're stepbrothers.  Does it feel weird to think that?" Taylor said as she waves a fry around for emphasis.

"I guess so.  It scares me more than anything.  I mean, Luke already hates me.  I don't know about Brad though, unless Luke has gotten him to hate me too." I dipped my fry into the ranch that was dripping off my chicken bacon ranch sandwich.

Taylor wrinkled up her nose at my ranch covered fry.

"Gross.  But anyways.  Like, even if Brad does end up hating you, you still have Evan and the twelve year old one.  What's his name again?"

I tried to remember what James had called him, but I couldn't quite remember.

"I don't remember."

"Alex, you're off to a horrible start.  You can't even remember the kids name!"

"I know!  I'm too stressed right now.  I can't think right." I sat back, throwing down the rest of my sandwich. "I'm not really hungry anymore.  Kind of just want to go to sleep."

Taylor looked at me carefully.  Finally she sighed and said, "You can't sleep to get rid of you're problems. You'll just wake up later."

"I know. But it's nice to forget for a while."

She nodded.

"I only understand because of my parents."

I immediately felt bad.  My problems are so minor compared to Taylor's.

"Come on.  You can spend the night with me tonight if you want to.  We'll watch Netflix and eat pizza all day." I grinned, knowing that would cheer her up.  I was right.  In a matter of seconds she had her big smile plastered on again.

"Sounds good.  Lets go."
