"YOU'RE WHAT??"
"Honey, I know it's a bit out of the blue, but we have been seeing each other for a little over a year. Come on, it won't be too bad now will it?"
This is the part where I should feel bad for reacting negatively, and I should apologize. But I had just found out my mother was getting remarried. Again.
"Mom not again. Please, I haven't even met the guy."
My mom sighs, obviously frustrated with me.
"Well that's because you refuse to meet him."
Which is true, I can't deny that. But I had figured he was just another weirdo that was only interested in my mother's looks and money. Like the last two guys.
"Yeah well, maybe that's because I didn't want to meet him. And I still don't." I crossed my arms and frowned at her. She just looked at me though, like she was trying to figure something out. Finally she sighed, throwing her hands in the air in surrender.
"Fine, fine. You don't have to meet him. Yet." she stood up from the couch and started to walk towards the kitchen. I groaned, wanting to punch something.
Finally I decided I wanted to know when I would have to meet my mom's new fiance.
"Then when do I have to meet him?" I yelled. She appeared in the doorway and opened her mouth to reply when the doorbell rang. Her face automatically turned red.
"No." I gasped. "Please tell me that's not him."
But mom only gave me a sheepish smile then hurried off to answer the door. I groaned, throwing my head back onto the sofa. I could hear them talking, but I couldn't understand what they were saying. I considered running upstairs to my room and locking myself in. I considered running out the back door. I even considered trying to hide under the cushions of the couch, but in the end, I decided I would meet the guy.
"Alexis, honey? Are you still in here?" my mom called out. I knew she was afraid I had run off and hidden somewhere. It's not like it hasn't happened before. But this time it wasn't just some guy she's known for a week or so. It was the guy she'd been seeing for over a year, not to mention he's now her fiance. So I pushed myself up and off the couch, waited a minute, then headed towards the dining room where my mother was.
"Yeah mom. Still here." I forced a smile on face. She looked up and smiled, a real actual smile, and I could tell she was happy I had stuck around.
"James, this is my daughter, Alexis. Alex, this is James." So that was his name. He looked okay, he was dressed nice, suit and tie. His hair had a grayish tint to it, but was mostly blond. He stook his hand out. I looked at it for a second, my mind going completely blank. I blinked a couple times, trying to get the black fuz that was growing at the edge of my vision to go away. I heard my mom clear her throat and I remembered that I'm supposed to shake his hand. So that's exactly what I did. James gave a small laugh that made me jump.
"I don't bite, Alexis. No need to stare at my hand as if I have lepersy." James smiled at me. I felt bad now. How awkward it must've been for him.
"I'm sorry about that." I apologized. "I guess I'm just kind of out of it today." James nodded as if he understood completely. I was grateful he didn't ask me about it. I wouldn't have known how to explain.
"Well, I have the food ready, so I'll just run and get that." my said as she hurried off into the kitchen.
James and I sat in an awkward silence until she got back.
"Here we are!" mom set the gigantic plate of steak on the table. "I'll just run and get the corn and fries now."
Once again, I faced an extremely long 46 second awkward silence with James.
"There we go!" a bowl of corn was plopped down in front of me.
"All for me? You shouldn't have." I exclaimed mockingly.
James laughed and my mother smiled.
After we all got the food we wanted we said a quick prayer then dug in. James seemed to be enjoying his steak, considering it was gone in less than two minutes.
"Helen," he said to my mom, "that was the best steak I've ever eaten in my life."
My mom grinned happily. It had been a while since she cooked for anyone other than me.
"Are you sure you tasted it?" I asked him. He looked at me in confusion. "You ate it so fast," I continued, "I was about thinking you were just swallowing it whole."
He laughed and shook his head.
"So Alexis -"
"Alex. I like to be called Alex." I interupted.
"Sorry. Alex, where do you go to school at?" James asked.
"Midville High." I answered. I held back the sarcastic comment I had about said. Nothing offensive, just too sarcastic.
"Oh really?" James smiled as if he were pleased.
"Yeah."
"My son's go there also. Probably about you're age. How old are you?"
Woah. James had children? I would eventually have step siblings?
"Sixteen. How old are you?" Okay, I said that a bit too rudely. I tried to cover it up. "I mean how old are you're kids?"
James's widened eyes softened. "Oldest one is eighteen. Then the twins are sixteen, like you. Youngest one is ten."
I tried to remember any twins in my grade. There were the two Smith brothers that everybody knew. Panic seemed to be inching its way into my brain. I pushed the thought away though. There was no way James was the Smith brothers dad. So I guess that narrowed it down to Stacy and Tracy or Phil and Mark.
"Are the twins Stacy and Tracy?" I asked James. I guess it would be okay having them as step sisters. Their not too bad.
"No, I have all boys." James replied.
Oh.
"So Mark and Phil?"
James looked confused.
"So no Mark and Phil."
There must be some other twins in my grade. Maybe I just don't know them because we don't have any classes. That must be it.
"Actually my sons names are Lucas and Bradley. Not even close to Mark and Phil." James chuckled. My mom chuckled.
No no no.
"You mean, Luke and Brad... Smith?"
James smiled. "Oh, so you know them!"
I felt sick.
"Yeah, but not personally." I muttered.
"Oh." James seemed slightly disappointed at that.
"And his oldest son is Evan Smith." mom piped up. She had stayed quiet.
I felt very sick.
"The youngest is Blake and he's only - Alex, are you alright?" James leaned forward.
No. No I'm not alright.
I gritted my teeth. "Yeah, my stomach just hurts. I think I'm going to go to bed. I'm not feeling so well." I told my mom. She nodded but seemed confused. She looked down at the food questioningly.
"Food was great mom. You should cook more often." I said, patting her back. I was trying to let her know it wasn't her food making me sick.
It was James's son's.
James's disgusting, perverted, annoying son's that everybody in the school absolutely adored.
Everyone but me.
