*FLASHBACK *
I stared straight ahead not saying a word. Next thing I know, the van became filled with smoke. I don't mean cigarette smoke, Jo had pulled a blunt out of her pocket and lit it. "Joanna, don't you know that's illegal?!" I screamed at her. Spencer rolled down the windows to let the smoke out. "No no no you can't do that! Cops will see it!" I panicked. "Pigs won't tell the difference Olive." Spencer remained calm, and it was freaking me out. I turned to face Jo and Alf, who were calmly ruining their lives. I snatched the drugs out of Jo's hand, and threw it out the window. "Hey!" She screamed back at me. "Shut up Jo, I don't want to hear your crap. And Alf, get rid of that liquor!" He retorted "Get rid of it?" as he threw it up at the front seat. It hit Spencer in the back of the head as he swerved down Sunset Boulevard. Red and blue lights flashed and soon we heard the siren of a police car trailing close behind us. I panicked, throwing the bottle underneath the seat. Spencer sped up the van into Hollywood Hills, trying to lose the heat.
Just when we figured we had lost the police, Spencer swerved and SMACK!
*End Flashback*
The car ride with Joanna was quiet. We decided to pull over right before getting on Interstate 5. Spencer got out of his truck and walked over to my Bug and leaned inside the window, looking from me to Jo and then back at me. Kit followed behind, going on the other side of the car into Joanna's window. "Okay so, what exactly is the plan?" Spencer asked. "Did you bring enough food and water?" I smirked at him, knowing exactly what I had planned. "I brought enough of this" I said, while I was pulling the wad of cash out of my duffle bag. "This is technically all I have on hand, but I have more in the bank." Spencer stared into my eyes, and I stared back into his. I could feel Joanna and Kit looking at me as well. "You've been planning this all along, haven't you?" I got quiet, knowing that he already knew the truth. Spencer always could see straight through me, I hated him for that, but I loved it at the same time. "So like, are you a part time stripper?" joked Kit. I rolled my eyes and slipped the money back into my duffle bag pocket. I looked at Spencer, choosing my words wisely, careful not to upset him. "You shouldn't ask obvious questions when you already know the answers." He didn't reply to me, and simply turned around and walked back to his truck. I could tell I kinda pissed him off, but it was the truth. He already knew that I was going to leave, so he should stop acting like it's some kind of surprise. Kit followed suit back to the truck, and Joanna stayed quiet for once.
I put my sunglasses on as I hooked my phone up to the auxiliary cord. I didn't want to make any more eye contact with my friends until we got onto the first rest stop. We entered onto the interstate going north, and I looked forward to reaching the rainy state. I wasn't sure if we could make it all the way out of California tonight, so we would have to rent a motel room. I tried to be optimistic as we continued to drive on. But, I knew that everybody on the road trip didn't feel the same as me.
After about 10 minutes of driving north, I looked over at Joanna and saw her texting on her phone. I opened my mouth, ready to say something, but I chose my words wisely again. "What did Spencer text you earlier?" I simply asked. "Nothing, I didn't even know he texted me." She said, without looking up from her phone. 'That's complete crap' I thought to myself. We drove in silence for about 20 more minutes, until I decided that I couldn't take it anymore. "Jo, you know I'm not mad at you, right?" She finally looked up, amusement in her face. "Yeah okay, everybody's mad at me." she said, looking over at me before looking back down at her phone. "Jo, I don't want to drive all the way to Seattle in silence." She didn't reply to me, and it was really starting to tick me off. I hated being ignored and she knew that. "Can you at least light me a cigarette?" She took heed to that, and lit one for herself. I turned down the radio because I needed to vent.
