Chapter Six
Rachel stood by the lockers, her body engulfed in the shadows cast by them. She watched the fight before her. She was behind enemy lines, having slipped away from her group when she’d found out what they planned to do. She knew exactly where to be positioned and when to take action.
She’d seen Amy move from the main pack as well, letting the other girls get pummelled by the paint as she attempted to get her target. Rachel shook her head at the thought; one should never be so blinded by a goal that they cannot notice anything else around them. Amy was not acting rationally and should’ve been there instructing her troops. Instead she was moving closer to the boy’s captain which was a good plan but not the right one at the moment.
Rachal already had her slingshot cocked, the string drawn back as it strayed from target to target. She could see the people fighting, the captain, and the boy who sat shivering against the wall. She’d seen no threat in him until he began to shift. Amy raised her slingshot, within reaching distance of the boys captain. The shivering boy did exactly as Rachel had predicted and Amy was none the ware.
Rachel’s position became compromised as the boys began to turn, noticing the commotion behind them. Rachel let fly, her slingshot letting go with speed and accuracy. She barely had to think and within no time her first ammunition clip was empty.
Amy swung around, focusing in on Rachel’s form as she came forward. Amy’s mouth hung open but instead of speaking she moved to her soldiers. Rachel joined them as they left, making their way to the exit. Nobody spoke as they ran, each attempting to get their breath back . But each one of those girls looked at Rachel, Sam and Amy included.
Amy led them through their hidden exit, the one they’d been going through when the boys had turned up. Once they were out in the open night air each of them let out a sigh of relief. The chill barely bothered Rachel and she closed her eyes as she let a shiver run through her. The goupr was moving around to the front of the stadium to meet the others when Rachel felt a tap on her shoulder. Rachel swung around to find Amy with a state of shock present on her face.
“Woah, girl. You were amazing back there,” Amy said in disbelief. “You’re Sam’s new partner right?”
Rachel nodded, still getting her breath back.
Amy continued, a huge grin appearing on her face. Se knew as well as Rachel that the battle back there had won them the game. With that many boys killed thre was no doubt that it was a win. “Is this your first year at the school? You’re a good shot.”
Sam answered for Rachel, jogging along side them. “She’s a transfer actually.”
“Really?” Amy seemed surprised, swinging around to face Rachel. “From where?”
Rachel gulped, dread racing through her. She’d been hoping she would never have to face this. She’d hoped she could’ve lasted the year without that question being asked. It was an answer she didn’t want to say. The words slipped from her tongue before she could stop them. “Ararian College.”
The silence that followed was awesome.
