The sound of pounding footsteps slapping against the cold slate tiles were lost among the busy and chaotic ground floor of the hospital despite being just five in the morning.

Kaden had drove Remy to the hospital that was located in the middle of Manhattan from the outskirts of the city in less than fifteen minutes. It was probably thanks to the lack of cars on the road during early dawn and of course, Kaden's roaring Bugatti which he was so proud of. They were lucky he wasn't stopped for over speeding.

The nurse from the reception directed Rey to the 37th floor. This was where large expensive private wards were located, which was a total contrast from the hectic scene downstairs.

The pungent smell of antiseptic was masked with a mild sweet smelling fragrance, and the corridor was plushly carpeted in a pattern of yellow and brown hexagons instead of plain slate gray tiles. The waiting area in the middle of the corridor was decorated in matching light brown leather settees and beautiful paintings of flowers and scenic views adorned the pastel yellow walls.

Rey rushed past nurses who seemed unhurried as they made their rounds from room to room. They moved with a certain air of tranquility that Rey strongly wished she be affected by it to at least calm herself down. She finally came to a stop at the end of the long hallway, and saw a familiar looking man already lurking outside the door.

Concern was evident on the man's face as he waited outside her mother's ward. Rey warily approached the door and when the man noticed her presence, his worried face lightened up a notch. "Rey!"

Rey had never really liked River Winters, her mother's movie star boyfriend. River was 16 years younger than her mother, and just 5 years older than Chevelle.

Rey's father died in a helicopter crash when she was ten, but her mother didn't start meeting new people until three years ago. River was her fourth boyfriend and the youngest she had ever dated. And with the trend she was going, she would start dating men Kaden's age in no time.

"The doctors are still inside the room," River said when Rey moved forwards to open the door. "According to them, it's just a mini heart attack and not very serious."

Rey nodded in reply and an awkward silence started to stretch between them. She really wished Kaden was here with her right now. He had just dropped her off at the entrance of the hospital and drove off to find a parking spot. At least Kaden's presence would make this thick tension bearable.

It wasn't only Rey who felt the awkward tension intolerable. River rubbed the back of his head and licked his lips nervously. "My plane just landed this morning and I hadn't even left the airport when a call came in about Chevelle. I'm sorry for your loss."
