"Mama, I'm telling you. Something ain't right about the way I been feeling."
"I know something ain't right. You the problem all on your own."
"How you gonna blame me for this, Mama? Do you really think I'm purposefully thinking 'bout hurting myself?"
"If you would pray more and quit listening to all that demonic music and those dead boys you wouldn't be having all these problems now would you?"
"Mama, how could you even say that! Do you even care that I've been depressed since dad died? Hollywood Undead has nothing to do with all this, because if anything, they make me feel better about myself and their music supports me unlike you!"
"What did you say to me? Now girl you better watch how you speak to me, I am your mother! You must've lost your mind!"
"Yeah, you're my mother, but you're a sorry ass excuse for one."
Smack.
"Jasmine Ann Thomas don't you ever speak to me like that again, ever in your life. Otherwise that slap you just got right now would seem like nothing more than child's play. Do you understand me?"
"Yes," She mutters through gritted teeth, biting back the stinging tears threatening to spill from her eyes.
"Yes, what?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Now go to your room. You're on punishment until further notice. When I get up for work in the morning, that phone, laptop, and gaming system better be on that dining room table, and when I get back, this house better be spotless. Do you understand me?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Now go on to your room, and think about how to talk to your mother like you got some damn sense."
That night while sitting in her room, Jamie sat in the middle of her bed with her mind racing and her hope completely lost.
"My own mom don't even care about my well being, so why would anyone else?" She thinks aloud.
"She don't care that my dad's death still fucking haunts me. She don't care that I'm stressed out because I'm probably not even gonna graduate. She just don't care. I'm tired of this shit."
Jamie sits there on her bed, crying out every tear she has left. Then she grabs her phone and sends a text to her best friend, telling her about what happened and that she needs to escape. Once she receives assurance that their special place is ready, she waits until she knows for sure that her mother is sound asleep and grabs her things and walks out the front door.
For an hour and a half, Jamie rides her bike all the way to the other side of town where she meets up with her childhood best friend, Dana. The two hop into Dana's car and drive to their special place; a house left to Dana by her grandparents. The only ones who know about this place are Dana's parents, and they don't seem to care if she goes whenever she pleases.
So the two high school seniors sit in the den, cuddled up under piles of blankets in the midst of an all-night movie marathon while indulging in ice cream, popcorn, chicken wings, and whatever other comfort foods they could get their hands on.
"Dana," Jamie speaks.
"Yeah babe?"
"We got four months until graduation, right?" Jamie asks.
"Yeah we do," Dana confirms.
"That means I got four months to get my shit together."
"What do you mean?" Dana asks.
"I'm not staying in Atlanta any longer than I have to. I'm tired of being ignored by my own mom. As soon as I graduate, I'm moving to LA."
"Are you serious, girl?" Dana turns to Jamie, shock written all over her face.
"I can't take it here no more."
"Well then what the hell is your plan? Huh? Where you gonna live? How you gonna feed yourself? Do you even know anybody there?"
"No I don't. I don't know anything about LA, but I got four months to figure this shit out. Anywhere is better than that hell hole of a house with my mom."
Silence falls between the two girls. They continue their indulgence in junk food and cliche Lifetime dramas until Dana speaks up.
"Let me go with you," she says.
"What?" Jamie questions.
"If you go through with this, then let me go with you. My dad has connections out in California and my parents said that whether I straight up move out or go to college after I graduate, they'll give me everything I'll need."
"I almost forgot both of your parents are big shot lawyers. It's a miracle they let you go to any of our schools," Jamie chuckles.
"They say it's good for me to experience what life is like for people not as fortunate as us. I ain't complaining because had it not been for them sending me to public school, I'd have never met my sister from another mister."
"I'll toast to that." They scoop into their respective pints of ice cream and touch their spoons together before shoving the spoons into their mouths.
"Dana?"
"Yeah Jamie?"
"What would I do without a friend like you?"
"You not my friend, hoe. You're my sister."
"Always and forever, bitch."
