It Goes Like This

"There's a famous tale, here in this small town of Foxenn. It's not exactly... old, though. The story took place here, in this town, this school, this neighborhood, exactly 17 years ago. It's not about war, or heroism, or a great adventure, but a tale about deception and heartaches. That's why it was named as the Liar's Tale."

The brunette teacher inhaled deeply, before flashing a kind smile to her students. Her eyes looked like she's drifting back to time, remembering memories that seemed like yesterday.

"But... Miss, how is that related to our topic now? Writing, Miss Nier. This is hard as heck for us you know! Most of us suck at this.." A female student with bright brown eyes whined in defeat, slumping down on her desk.

The other students also whined, and some pleaded for mercy in the most exaggerated tones. This made the brunette teacher chuckle. Her students, the juniors, always complained about tons of schoolwork.

"Alright, alright. Settle down, everyone. This is not a schoolwork, okay? We can make this a leisure work, you know? Like... a game, perhaps?"

The whole class' attention focused on her.

Bingo, she thought as she walked to the chalkboard. She took a chalk and wrote at the center of the board.

Who did it?

She faced the class again. The students' faces displayed confusion, anticipation, and tiredness.

"Are you all familiar with...?" She trailed off, biting her lip in anxiousness. She wanted the students to enjoy the lesson, and this was the first idea that came to her.

"Yes, Miss Nier!" The class answered in unison. Their tone were surprisingly alert.

Her smile returned.

"Well then, as I said, this'll be a game. If you win, I'll give you high grades in Writing for the 3rd Periodical Finals."

All 26 students cheered, shouted, hooted, and jumped in joy. Class 4-C is probably the loudest class in the whole 3rd floor as of now.

"Alright, here's how it will go. I will tell the story, and I will stop at certain points in the story and ask a very vital question that can either continue the story and raise your grades, OR stop this game and pull your grades down. It all depends if you can get the answers right. Are we clear?"

The children's expressions became serious and determined.

There are several variations of that story: One, in which a girl killed everyone for unknown reasons. Two, in which the girl's younger brother was the killer. Three, in which an unknown person was the killer. Four, all of them commited suicide out of guilt for the girl's unknown death. And five, in which the girl never died but was sent to an asylum, escaped, and killed everyone out of madness.

She knew which one was the truth.

Her students tensed, bracing for the story. She smiled and sat in her desk.

"Shall we start?

It all starts with the end.."
